What would be the first step - bleed the system? What could be going wrong?

It sounds like you have air in the system. You can try bleeding it to see if it firms up but chances are that the air will return - maybe a cracked hose, seal, etc. That said, I would think you would be losing fluid somewhere as well. On the other hand, it could be an internal leak in the master cylinder - fluid leaks past a seal but remains in the closed system - although I haven't personally experienced this as of yet.

. . . . However, the level of the clutch liquid hasn't dropped and I don't see leakage anywhere. What would be the first step - bleed the system? What could be going wrong? I feel like switching to a longer rod might only be delaying the problem slightly if there is a bigger issue somewhere else.

hi rloaderro. nomis could be correct that there is air in the line. Bleed the system to eliminate that problem. However what you describe (quoted above) sounds like an internal leak in the master cylinder.

So if bleeding doesn't cure the problem, you may be in for a M/C replacement. And if you do that, you might as well replace the slave cylinder because it's probably just as old and has operated under the same conditions as the master.

I had issuses myself.Went to the local bolt company.Bought a bang of grade8 bolts and ground off the heads to a round over and at lengths untill I got it right.Keep a couple in the glovebox. Also new slave.God,I love this stuff.

ok I have the exact same problem. on a 72 three finger clutch. I have monkeied with this thing a plenty. and finally took the spring back off and admitted defeat. But with this new found hope I will try again because it does make good sense. But does anyone have an extra slave cly bracket. Mine is missing. and have not been able to locate one through any parts houses. So as of right now I am single bolting it.:bang:

it could be the rod i have at least 3 different lenght rods on the shelf form various 40s over the years have had to switch a couple to make things work good luck

However what you describe (quoted above) sounds like an internal leak in the master cylinder.

Thanks - you were right on the money! I had some bolts made up and it did fix the problem temporarily, but I guess the cylinder kept leaking so it had to be replaced. Was relatively cheap though - only about $50 for a new replacement.
