Getting geared up to swap in my rebuilt R151F with crawler t-case (finally!), may start this weekend. The clutch in my truck now has about 80K on it, I know of 2 times when I abused it enough to get it stinky and smoky, so I know it's close to shot. Trying to decide what to do, but I think I've made my mind up already. Looking for holes in my thinking...

I have the clutch and flywheel from the turbo parts truck. The clutch is in remarkable shape, not new but still quite a bit of material on the disk. It is an AISIN clutch. I think I'll just have the turbo flywheel resurfaced, then put it in, with the used clutch. Might as well use it, right? I think the turbo flywheel is a little bigger in diameter at the clutch contact point, but I don't know about the weight.

Am I missing something?
 
Well, I've never used anything but AISIN clutches (OEM from Toyota), have been happy with them so far. I know the turbo clutch on the 22RTE is a little bigger, so I'm sure it will be up to the massive torque of my tired ol' 22RE. ;)

Actually, now that I think of it, I made the mistake of installing a no-name aftermarket clutch from AutoZone once. Huge mistake, that POS lasted about 1500 miles and fell apart. :mad:
 
every time i did a steep hill climb my stock toyota clutch would slip and burn and stink, so i talked with a service adviser at the local dealership, he was an offroader, he told me that toyota designed it that way so the clutch would slip before something more expensive broke. so when i had the engine out i put in a centerforce and it has not slipped so it is now in my 84 4runner and when it is time i will buy another one. also i but it in my 87 in 96 and drove the truck about 140 miles a day into dc and offroaded on weekends i finally killed it when the trans went out after driving it through the Shenandoah river and got water in the trans that was in 2000.
 
New Centerforce DF clutch from Summit = $310 + shipping

Clutch sitting in my garage right now = FREE

Time to swap a clutch = 4 hours

What would you do? :)
 
i would buy the centerforce, but to put another spin on it i am out of work. so at this moment i would use the free in the garage one and get about 100 to 200 thousand miles out of it. i do not get to go offroading much any more.
 
if i had the money and i were doing the work you are doing i would definitely buy the centerforce. and check around i think four wheel wharehouse had it for $293 with free shipping not long ago when i thought mine was gone.
 
Well... considering I also just dropped ~$400 for a new header from LCE (arrived yesterday), I think a new clutch "just because" is not a good idea right now. I just want to make sure I'm not missing some glaring technical issue.
 
i do not know if it is different or not. i do not think so if it were it would be in the trans input shaft, so you would have to use the turbo clutch any how. but you might have to use your fly wheel. the turbo engines could have used a different crank. like i said i do not know for sure.
 
OT, what are the 1st and 5th gear ratio's on the R151F? I thought I heard it had a lower 1st and a taller overdrive, can anyone confirm? Thanks!

Yes, this is true, this is one of the reasons why the R151F is so desirable. Check out the data on the expert's (Marlins) website:

I wonder if the R154 out of the turbo Supra is similar enough to the 151 to swap 5th gear.... :D
 
I went with the LC Engineering Pro Street clutch after considering both the Centerforce and some of Marlin's offerings. Cost wasn't a major factor in my decision but I remember paying less than $300.
 
Not to stir the pot but I have had a Autozone clutch in my truck for 50k miles without any issues whatsoever.

This is with hauling a trailer up and down Jellico Mountain many many times.

So, not sure expensive is always the way to go. And like many have said, why do you need a high friction clutch on a 22re? I have never, not once, burnt my clutch and I have pulled many a truck out in farm fields-amazing how the diesel Dodges just spin the tires in wet/mud considering all the torque and being unloaded.
 
he might have been looking at a centerforce 2 i just have the centerforce one i like it because it behaves the same as stock on take off but the more rpms the more grab. and with my stock with out a trailer it would slip on steep hill climbs. with the centerforce i have hauled 1 1/2 cords of wood on my trailer over a mountain on a logging trail just to get to the main road and no slippage what so ever.
