I know this has been brought up before, I did read the old threads, but did not see an answer, so please bear with me.

Rick made a reference to cleaning the scan rails in a thread about a malfunctioning cd player.

Yesterday I bought the radioshack cleaner cd, put it in, started spinning it, spun for several minutes, i got scared hit eject. I tried it again when i got home, now it will take the CD in, and as soon as it spins up it spits it out. Does the same thing with normal cds. I never heard the recorded instruction track on the cleaner disk.

Before I buy someone's old factory radio, I want to try manually cleaning mine like Rick did, but I'm not sure what to clean. I assume I pull the radio, clean the lense very carefully with something lint free, and then clean the tracks taht the lense rides in. Do i lubricate the tracks after cleaning?

Thanks.

Also, when did the radios change (my mom's 97 is different from my 93), and are the later ones plug and play with the older ones?

As far as the cleaning goes. I have always pulled the radio and cleaned manually. I have lubed the rails with dry silicone spray.
The radios changed in the mid 90s, not sure exactly when, but they do plug, and bolt right in. I have used a 97 in a 92 and now have 97s in both my 61 and 62 series.

I have some 'silicone spray" on my shelf, but it doesn't appear dry when sprayed... Is all silicon lube dry, or do I need to go find some "Dry Silicone Spray"

Thanks!

The real culprit that I found was with the lead screw. The lube used on it dries out and then bogs down the motor that drives it. Basically you need to remove the face and then separate the upper and lower sections. Once apart the scan assembly can be accessed through the bottom of the player. I'm in CT right now til Friday but watch the site in the evenings so dive in and post some questions if needed.

Rick, Details would be appreciated. I'd like to clean mine.

C-man -Hopefully I'll take mine apart wednesday, and take pics, and I'm sure ask questions, so hopefully you can get what you need out of my trials and tribulations. Maybe Rick will only have to answer each question once.

I gave my old radio away so I can't work up any kind of pictured proceedure however if you take some pics and e-mail them to me I can mark them up and post what I did to get mine working properly.

I'll do it.
Tomorrow at the earliest, this weekend at the latest.

Rick and Bailey, Any update? Andrew sent me his '97 radio, and I'm going to clean it and mine up.

I pulled the '93 radio apart and cleaned/lubed it, to no avail.

I never sent the pics to Rick, and have since deleted them. The dissasembly is straightforward, you won't have a problem (good set of small screwdrivers necessary), I'm still not completely clear on what and how to clean and lube, there are several threads on the topic, some started by me, all the info you need should be in there.

If the cd player works, I probably wouldn't perform this service until necessary.

Look at the post dates josh, I did all this several months ago.

May I suggest a half useful remedy ?

Try playing your CD's in random mode . This will force the thingmabob to track back and forth .. warming it up a bit . I do this all the time now , and the later tracks work best to start ... and then eventually the lower #'d tracks work fine . It beats trying to start from the beginning ... skip/skip/skip

TY
