Ok - back from an awesome trip to Moab. Issue over the 2300 mile trip that got worse on the trek home Sunday that has me concerned.

History - started hearing a very minor sound from left front on right hand turns. Nothing from the right side on left hand turns. Kind of discounts what I thought was just the lugs from the KM2's not being worn from cornering as this started shortly after having the tires rotated and balanced. The initial sound was like mud terrain tires on pavement.

Sound has gotten progressively worse to the point that the last few right hand turns near home I was just hoping I didn't have a birf explode on me! Yes - it's gotten that bad and my anal OCD has kicked in horribly bad!

It's more of a grinding sound on turns, not the typical click, click that get's described when a birf is wearing out. I've never had any seepage from the wiper on the back side of the knuckles (either side). The birfs were redone by me with Boyd's coaching in his back yard at about 185K and I've got 229K on the odometer now. Both birfs showed typical wear and we swapped sides before reassembly.

Things I'll do next Saturday:

Jack truck up and check for play in the wheel. Perhaps 54mm nut has come loose. If that's all it is, I'll consider myself lucky.

Pull wheel and check for loose caliper bolts, etc.

Pop square nut and stick a zip tie down to see if there's still moly in the knuckle.

Anything else that might be apparent to check w/o opening it up?

Have the know how thanks to Boyd as well as the tools, but not the time or inclination to do it again myself! I don't think my aging knees could take it right now.

Would take it to either Yotamaster or SDTrux this time around.

Right side is just fine and the truck ran and performed like a champ the entire time at Moab. Will mention a not so great wobble between about 67-72mph - and yes you can drive that and faster once you get out of the PRK! Top speed I hit per the trip computer was 81.6 mph somewhere in Utah where they have sections where it's 85 mph legally! Wobble might be due to a slight allignment issue. When I had the bushings replaced I'm not sure the guy got the lengths quite right as he couldn't get the truck quite to spec. I'll have that checked too when I take her in for this issue.

I'm going with wheel bearing noise. As you mentioned, you nuts might have backed off. Check the bearings for damage.

I have the same noise. Right side on left turns. Only during turns- tighter the turn, worse it is.

I was thinking birfs and was planning on swapping sides during rebuild.

Wouldn't bearing noise be constant?

Pat

It is a more consant grinding than a clicking.

Has your truck seen water lately?

Take the grease cap off and see if there's any water in there. Water + metal = rust. Rust + bearings = grinding.

Oh, so it's a constant grinding. Not just during turns?

Pat

Only when turning right, not left or straight.

Truck hasn't seen water in quite awhile and lives a bless life in SoCal.

Put her up on jack stands yesterday afternoon - no wobble at all pulling at 12 & 6, nor at 3 and 9. Caliper looks good. Went ahead and popped off the flange and 54mm nuts and star washer were nice and tight like they should be. Didn't dig further into it as I dont' have the flange gasket, oil seal, etc. to complete the bearing repack at this point. It's also about all my knees could handle, even sitting on a stool. Off to the shop she goes.

Mine went bad over time. When i made a sharp turn going slow, there was a big knock, felt in the steering. One day, in traffic, the vehicle wouldnt turn to the left. I had to nurse it into a nearby yard, (with permission of course) and called the mechanic. He knew instantly what it was and after pulling out the birf, i was able to drive home. He said he had seen that happen off road with various 4bys, He had never seen it happen on blacktop

Left front birf was toast - being replaced. I think I'm probably very lucky I made it home from Moab safely! No pics yet. Truck is still down at SD Trux.

Are you staying with stock yota Birfs? How much were you quoted if ordered from the dealer,,

CRUISER TIME

Dave Stedman at Japan 4x4 can get them cheaper than CDan. He quoted me $875 for a pair shipped from Japan. Having said that I went with Slee's cheap replacements.

Glad I found this thread. Mine started doing it on the way home from camping this past weekend. Front right side makes a grinding noise only while turning left, the sharper the worse the noise.
Looks like its going to be a greasy weekend...

Well....it ended up being nothing more than my left slider grinding against the truck body on right hand turns when the truck leaned. A little adjustment on the allignment of the slider and grinding is gone per SD Trux. Good they got into the birfs anyway as some water had made a little mess of the moly. Not enough to have it seeping out of the knuckle tho and seals to the diff oil are solid. I'd changed the front/rear and tcase oil right before the trip to Moab. Picking her up this afternoon. Another mystery solved by the gang at SD Trux. I think they are getting tired of scratching their heads over the mysteries I bring them!

Wow, way to turn a $0 problem into a $1500 one :flipoff2:

EDIT: I was thinking about this on the drive in. The slider is bolted/welded to the frame. The body sits on the frame. How is it that the slider interferes with the body thus creating the noise?

If the birf is going, will that grinding sound come and go? Meaning will it happen for a few turns and then go away. I had that sound pop up a month ago for a day (during a left turn) and then it hasn't happened since. I just replaced my trans oil and gasket, oil pan gasket, and valve cover gasket (procrastination has ended). I also have changed the oil in the t case and diffs. I would hate to have to do this now.

lift the axle so that the oil doesn't run out
