I've read a lot of recovery threads & they've got me wondering some things. I've read where some say a Class V-3 hitch isn't quite up to the task as an aggressive recovery point but have never seen anyone mention a class V-5. I just went & checked my rear factory tow loops & hitch. The loops are in good shape w/quality welds & the hitch is a class V-5 not V-3. It attaches using the 2 factory hoop holes & 1 further towards front on each side. If the hitch is adequate for recovery then I'm going to move the 2 loops to the front because I have none on the front. 2 questions:
is a class V-5 hitch a good recovery point?
who makes better recovery hoops that fit stock holes(that aren't $90)?

A class 5 hitch is probably a better pull point than anywhere else on your vehicle.

This is what I use for best load distribution. If youre concerned about overhang, you can leave it out on the trail and install it when it is needed.

I would trust the factory recovery hoops more than V-5 hitch for a recovery. The line of pull is almost direct to the frame using the hoops. Not so with the hitch; even a V-5 hitch could be overwhelmed by an agressive recovery. Some new hoops or points, AM or OEM, on the front would be my next purchase in your situation. Some threads on here regarding AM recovery points and modded Tundra recovery loops.

Those aren't recovery hoops.

They're tie-down hoops for transport.

OTOH, I hear that the URB brackets you can bolt into the same position are the bee's knees.

and fwiw, my receiver hitch (U-Haul branded, installed by PO) bolts on at those positions, so, uh, yeah.

naw, i saw the thread where it was determined that toyota calls them tow loops.

nothing to convince me that they are recovery loops.

Your class V hitch should be plenty for recoveries. If you are in a bind and don't have one of those fancy shackle receivers, you can use a receiver pin to hold a strap. As far as the "tow" hoops go, I have yanked the absolute s*** out of mine. Would I say you should do that, hell no, but they held up, and actually bent a shackle pin.

I'm convinced that's not correct.

I seriously doubt your U-haul brand hitch is a class 5. It's not only the mounting points but the construction & thickness of steel that sets it apart.

Thanks.

agreed, iirc it's class 3.

I dunno when i'd need a class 5 hitch on a cruiser.

What's a class V 5 receiver? Either it's a class 5 or 4 or 3. What's this "V" stuff?

All 80 series come with a class 4 receiver and it's a 2"x 2" receiver that's port installed. They're either Hidden Hitch or Valley hitch IIRC.

Different classes:

*shrug* the one that was on my 80 when i bought it at 168k miles had a u-haul sticker and is stamped with the name of the manufacturer, who escapes me at the moment.

That's totally normal too if the first owner didn't opt for the tow option.

It says V-5 on it just above where the piece slides in. Also says it on the piece that slides in. Some info. from the website you posted:

Heavy-Duty 2" x 2" Trailer Hitches

Some 2" trailer hitch receivers are catagorized as Class V hitches because of their increased weight capacity. The construction of these hitches allows them to carry more weight than a typical 2" hitch, making them perfect for heavy-duty towing applications.

Draw-Tite/Reese makes a Class V hitch with a cast center section so that it not only has a higher overall weight capacity, but it also has the highest tongue weight rating possible. The reinforced center sections on these hitches enable them to handle far more than just 10-percent of the gross trailer weight, which is a typical tongue weight capacity.

Interesting that your hitch says V 5. I always thought the "V" was roman numeral for the # 5. It seemed redundant to have a V and a 5.

Class V hitch = Class 5 hitch?

I'm with Ali, I really don't think that the port install receiver that we have is a true class 5. None the less, it is an excellent recovery point.

Never said it was port installed. Can y'all go look @ yours & see if it says "V-5" on it?

Here's mine. Does y'all's not look like this?

So would this be a good recovery point? If so I'm going to get one of those shackle slide in devices that was posted earlier.
