Can someone tell me if the cigarette lighter outlet stays live in a 1997 after the key is off? I'd plug my cigarette lighter in and test it myself but I don't have one (or anything else, like my iPod, with me).

Thanks,

TJK

(And thanks to Steve Smith for the heads up that this might be a problem in terms of plugging an ARB refrigerator/freezer in and having it actually refrigerate/freeze after the ignition is off.)

It doesn't. :(

It's easy to install an always-hot 12v outlet :D

Doug's right. Besides, the OEM cig lighter isn't rated for high amperage and continuous draw of many 12V accessories.

If you pop off your center console you'll find a +12v (always on) plug laying around under there.

Really? That's interesting...what's it look like? Is it an actual outlet, or do you have to wire it in?

It's one of these grey moset(sp) plugs that should have had a corresponding junction connector but doesn't. It's behind the shifter just lying on top of the carpet between the seats when the console is off.

I wired my $65 fridge/console in it's (old console) place.

Jim Reiss just told me the same thing.

What about in the back, he says there's a wiring harness near the subwoofer. Can I splice in there (which is where the unit will be located)?

Thanks,

TJK

Apologies, let's get this right. From Jim:

"If you pull the black piece surrounding the stereo and AC off and remove the 4 screws holding the stereo in and slide it out, you will find an unused harness connector behind the stereo. If my memory serves me right, the blue wire with either a silver or yellow stripe stays hot even if the key is off. I think I tapped into that for the 12+ DC for my stuff because I figured it had plenty of amps on it. Use a test light and you'll find one back there. Or you could bring one from the battery too. "

Can anyone confirm if this is true with a 94?

I installed a fuse box next to the battery. From there, I ran 10 gauge wire all the way back to the rear of the Cruiser.
There I installed 2 cigarette lighter 12V outlets. One for the Engel Fridge and the other for whatever I might need (Inverter, aux light, etc.)
I've had it for a while now and it works great.

Alvaro

I believe the 12V constant plug under the center console was for the in-car cell phone - which is an option on the LX450.

I stuck a test light into every socket I could find under there on my 97 and i coudn't find a hot one. I wound up tapping into the wires behind the harness, as was stated in Kaderabek's post above.

LX or LC? These simple things are nice to add to your signature...just an FYI ;)
