I could use some guidance for choosing a winch rope for the HF12k on the '93 FZJ80.

I expect the winch to be used sparingly, as the truck will not see many trails. Of course, I could keep the steel cable that came with the winch, but I don't want to... I've already got an aluminum fairlead.

I want 85 feet of 3/8 synthetic, but can't make up my mind... Amsteel Blue vs. AM Steel blue (wasn't there a trademark issue? I can't remember whether there is/was a difference or not...) vs. Masterpull vs. Ultrex ... I think I won't need the heavier grades of Masterpull.

Advice appreciated, thanks, michael

any good quality 3/8" line will work well.

Southeast overland has a good selection and is very helpful :)

I've got synthetic from a handful of suppliers...how Steve does the ends, the protective sleeves, the drum protection, etc...all tops the others.

The rope itself is largely the same...the finish work is what makes it nice. Southeast Overland has it right. It's what I run on my HF12k :)

Thanks Mace and Woody for the kind works.

We take pride in our lines and all are hand spliced to order by me - to your specs. We only use Samson Amsteel Blue which is made in the US.

We have made a good number of lines for the HF winches. We have 3/8" in stock in blue, orange and silver colors and can put whatever thimble and hook combos you want.

I'm in the shop tomorrow all day. Shoot us a call at 864-280-4238 or email Sales@SoutheastOverland.com or PM me here and we will take care of you. I can walk you through all your options. We also have been offering free shipping on our lines in the US lately. We will extend that to you too.

Thanks!

Wow, quite the endorsement :) - I guess I know where to go... EDIT: winchline incoming from Southeast Overland - thanks to Steve

Yes, we got the line for Claudia's 8274 on the '40 from Southeast Overland... and in fact, I get the fairlead from that purchase as a (never-used...) hand-me-down for the '80...

(rope not installed yet due to wiring not yet completed :o)

All right, the rope came in - now that's a hook!
Makes me kind of wonder about what I've got hanging on that cable on the Ramsey on the Blazer... then again, that thing has never let me down...

Steve, if you see this, I might have to pick your brain re the winch end of the rope. The steel cable of the HF12K actually went through the drum and was secured with an allen head set screw.

I suppose I could do two things to mount the rope: put a button-head screw through the copper lug that's crimped on the end of the rope and secure it into the threaded hole in the drum, or remove the copper lug, fiddle the rope through the hole in the drum, and use the set screw as before... advice greatly appreciated - thanks!

Glad you received and like your rope. Thanks for the business!

You can cut off the copper lug and put a set screw into the whipped section - that's probably what I'd do.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the link!
