Chirping engine sound (1 Viewer)

Anyone have an idea of what’s causing this noise? It gets louder and higher when I hit the gas. It’s intermittent though and never happens whenever I’ve brought it in for service. If anyone recognizes it let me know so I can tell them next time I bring it in.

Serpentine belt, tensioner, idler pulley, or possibly the fan support bracket. Mine sounded exactly like that only maybe 30% less often when it needed a bracket.

Worst case you need an alternator or power steering pump, but for us it’s usually one of the above.

What year is your 200? I have a similar noise in my 2016 - not as loud as yours. Was told by the Toy mechanic it was internal (cam chain tensioners) and a ridiculous $7k+ repair - it's a known noise over on the Tundra forums on the 5.7 motor. (Local dealer trying to make some $$$$)

But as @bloc points out, it's an external motor sound, something on the front, not internal. But beware if they try and tell you it's the cam tensioners, that's not the correct noise for those.

Mine sounded just like that before I had the belt replaced. The pulleys and tensioners on these rigs are built fairly robust and they don’t tend to go out, so it may just be the belt slipping a bit and causing the squeak (old age and dry rubber). You could hit it with a spritz of water with a spray bottle to see if it makes the sound go away temporarily.

If it’s the belt, make sure to go OEM when replacing it.

This heavily depends on mileage and use case. Many of us have had failed idler pulleys or tensioners that lost tension.

I agree belt is most likely but if @mcdermy is anywhere above 75-80k miles some of the other parts could very well need attention.

Very true, it’s almost a “might as well replace those while the belt is off anyway” type of thing since the part costs are relatively cheap.

If low mileage for the 2016, then it’s most likely the belt, but high mileage, you may want to replace the idler pulley and belt tensioner as a part of the repair.

At 68k, I doubt it’s the tensioner and idler pulley, and my bet is on the belt. BUT, replace what you will at your discretion

The chain tensioner do not "chirp". The belt and all do.
The tensioner noise subsides once the engine builds oil pressure. At 68k you should not have tensioner issues.
The bet is on belt and afferent items. My recent chirp was from fan support bearing. Belt was good. I ordered all but the support thinking that's the least likely to be bad. I was wrong and had to wait for the support to arrive from Rockauto, în the middle of the job. Don't be like me.

A bit early for that. I replaced mine per-emtively at 112k miles along with the belt.
On my benz, I had pulley making noise for a bit at around 100k miles/11 years , then it seized and shredded the belt, so these are good to replace.

I am in the middle of replacing idler pulley, tensioner, and belt on my 2015 with 80K miles. My buddy owns a dealer so parts were pretty cheap so seemed worthwhile. I will say as I take everything off... nothing seems like it needed repair/replace but I am no mechanic and it only cost me $213 for the parts for another 100K of hopefully care free miles (specifically related to these parts). I will keep the old belt as an extra on the road for worst case trail side fixes.

I’d say if all the parts are fresh and Genuine Toyota, the spare belt won’t be necessary.

Also as mentioned my fan bearing bracket was starting to make a little noise at 150k, so that’s the other “wear item” that should be considered. The only other hazards risking a belt would be PS, AC, or water pump.. all of which are quite rare and present bigger issues

Same issue, chirp on the belt. 2016 with 65k miles, did water test on the belt and it went away, its back now. Tested at night when is cooler outside and no chirp. Seems to happen when is nice and hot outside. Any one has a part number for OEM belt?

My 2015 had it at 56k miles. Belt and tensioner replaced, problem solved.

I’ll tell you fixing the belt, pulley and tensioner was a pretty easy thing to do and if a shop did it I imagine not terribly expensive either. It’s just take bolts off and put new things on with the bolts. Not a peep from under the hood after I changed mine. -best
