I am making a personal pledge for 2008 to do my absolute best to avoid all products made in China. As I look around at my desk here, I realize that may be a difficult task, but I'm going to pay close attention to everything I purchase next year and see if I can completely avoid China. My family and I already have successfully boycotted Walmart for the last 3 years, now we are stepping that up a notch. I'm not going to throw away things I already own (we already tossed my daughters toys with the China label), but I don't want to add anything else.

If anyone here is from China or of Chinese descent, this is not meant to be a slight against you or the beautiful land of China, but it is meant to be a slight against China's industrial practices. This year with all the bad pet food, bad toothpaste and medicines, and now the lead paint crap, I've had enough. I'm going to be more selective of what I buy and do I really need it that bad. I do realize there are things that are all but impossible to avoid, but I'm going to do my best.

Any body else want to join me?

Yup.

Alvin, You should throw this to chat too.

Hey Phil, where is that flashlight made anyway?;)

Just ordered one, thanks for the info...

That's funny... I was just thinking of doing a similar boycott of American goods. I was going to see if I could live the whole year of 2008 purchasing goods only made in China. I will eat only Chinese food with real Chineese ingredients like MSG and Sharpei. I will but my children only toys made in Chinese sweat shops that are decorated with lead based paints. I won't however go so far as to throw away my American made things that I already own, that would be very anti-American and anti-glutonous of me, which in itself is anti-American. It's not that I'm really into Chinese stuff, except for maybe Chow Yung Phat cause he's one cool mofo, it's just meant to be a slight aginst the United States Governmental practices and the Republican hijacking of our country.

Anybody want to join me?

Alvin,

I am boycotting "stuff" in general and have been selling and giving away most of it.

Just gonna get down to the essentials...

well its really got little to do with china,,, we did the same thing 100 years ago.. my beef is with America and fellow Americans for being so ambitious to not only export all our manufacturing and goods but also be so happy to buy it all back.
as for walmart i am at a crossroads,, i mean i dont like the big box store mentality and made in china goods, but walmart is providing a service that seems to be in very high demand so its not gonna go away, and they are leading the way in american buisiness with green earth friendly practices so i just dont know how to respond. i dont shop there much, but i do once in a while.
to me boycotting chinese made goods is about as effective as boycotting gasoline prices. but i am very interested to know how you chinese boycotters will draw the line with other imported goods, is it china only?? because you know if china stops producing stuff for us taiwan or sri lanca or any number of places is ready to step up. and if you do try to stick to a made in USA only mantra what are you gonna eat? ALOT of food is imported now. where will you buy gas? its almost all imported. what about? what about? what about?
its a noble idea baggins, but your only taking from one hand and giving to the other.

I am not a big fan of wallymart...they have cheap products but I believe you get what you pay for. I read today that the WalMart Italy runs the real estate holdings for American stores. Because WalMart Italy doesn't have any employees in America they avoid millions in taxes as a "foreign" corp. Such bull s***...I haven't and won't shop there. I'm not a big fan or Target either but my wife spends my $$$ there. As some point you decide you are going to be a Luddite, move to Montana ans start making pipe bombs or let the sole suckers take a little from you.

The dollar is hurting China more than you ever could Alvin...I appreciate the sentiment but China is having to prop up the greenback to keep its self from recession.

I say we buy from the cheese eating surrender monkey's (the French) now that Sarkozy has been elected...he actually likes the US...Wine anyone?

ya know i thought of another point to this,,,, say someone didnt just want to go "no china" but wanted to go "only american". how many options are there? i read that many american companies are foriegn owned and that number is growing.
it seems to me in this day and age the market is a global one, and the world is getting smaller all the time.

..... and the Republican hijacking of our country. Anybody want to join me?

Ummm No.

So I'm guessing you'll be selling the Toyotas and buy one of these?

Looks like a Honda Passport/Isuzu Rodeo knock off.

I love this line “In our 20-year history no car has performed as badly.”

Everyone wants their cheap goods that will end up in the landfill in 6 months. No one seems to care that “made in China” has been killing our pets, making our children sick and causing health problems for the rest of us. No one seems to care that the people of the USA are building up the largest communist government on the planet and in return they send us tainted goods. Doesn’t that bother any of you? Doesn’t it bother any of you that almost everything you buy comes from China and is generally of poor quality. Is cheap the only thing that matters to any of you?

You’re right, my couple of dollars won’t bother anyone. That’s why I posted it up, to get others to THINK about the s*** they spend their hard earned money on. Do you like buying some cheap do-dad that will break in 6 months and end up in the landfill. Do you like the idea that the toy your child loves so much, could be slowly killing him. Do you like the idea that you had to put your beloved dog down because her liver failed from tainted food. I know people who had to. It sucks! Do you like having to second guess the toothpaste you use or the cough syrup, because it could be tainted with ethylene glycol.

I’m not going to go through my house and toss everything I already own that says “made in China” (except most of Zoes toys and plates and bowls). That will only add to the mess at the landfill and won’t make a difference. I know that avoiding Chinese goods altogether will be virtually impossible. That’s the way it is. I’m simply asking people to think about where that cool little bauble comes from and do you really need it to make your life complete. Is that wrong? Or would you all rather find the negative in what I’m saying?

Mark, my Cruiser says made in Japan. I’m good with that.
Branden, nice. Thanks buddy.

Alvin, I agree with your ideas fully.

I have three young children and am fed up with chinese tainted goods. There are just too many horror stories about their manufacturing.

One of the latest ones I heard that pissed me off was the fake fur used in garments. Companies would ask for fake fur to be used on certains coats etc.... and the factory would do that. Unfortunately later it was found much of the fur wasn't fake at all. Instead is was found to be domestic dog fur.

My beef though is equal to the companies that choose to outsource there, when other countries with less shady practices may be available. Like Mexico.

I'm very happy if the goods originated from North America. USA/Canada/Mexico. That is where I like to spend my dollars.

If Americans supported Mexican factories I would guess there may be less illegals. It would be win/win situation for both sides.

Alvin:
I agree with you. Enough is enough, but I also agree with brownbear....I'm all for "Hecho en Mexico" I love Tecate, Tequila, and panchos!:D

As a matter of fact, I toss all my hard earned money into their economy every chance I get to get south of the border.

Lo que pasa en Mexico... se queda en Mexico!

Aqui esta a la vida!

Salud!
