This is a  but i can't remember what the heck this bracket was to..... I originally thought it bolted on the outside of the exhoust manifold but it is a different bolt spacing by a little. Was it to smog??

I have a balanced 383 long block that I am slapping my donor motors accessories onto. My new block came with a new harmonic balancer that has a flexplate that has matching numbers wrote on the outside of the box..... So here is my question I am not using the flexplate and am adapting back to the 4 speed so will I screw up my balancing by running the new harmonic balancer and an older flywheel?? I know they are internally balanced but I have myself confused now on the whole balanced motor thing........ I am sure this is a dumb quesion for most but unfortunately not for me so thanks for any help.
Why is my new harmonic balancer numbered with the flexplate that came with it?? Also I am running a flywheel so can you interchange harmonic balancers and the one that came with my motor is ok with my old resurfaced flywheel that i had laying around or is it possible that my motor could be externally balanced for any reason? I will call the company tomorrow to verify so feel free to take a stab at my question with no worries of steering me wrong but with a chance of allowing me to sleep tonight ;)

if your 383 uses a 400 crank (which as far as i know they do) then it is externally balanced not internally. that's why the matching parts. you will need to find out if you can get the flywheel balanced with the crank and harmonic balancer. and i have no clue on the bracket.

Howdy! Bracket does look like it should fit over exhaust manifold, maybe at rear of older Fridgidair A/C compressor. John

Thanks that is the one!! As for the 400 crank and externally balanced that is not going to make me sleep!! :D

Thanks guys

you'll need the extrenally balanced 400 flywheel. pretty sure i have a new one sitting on the shelf if you can't find one.:D

Actually you don't have a choice on the flywheel because they have different piloting and bolt patterns. The 1985-older internally balanced has an approx 2.5" center piloting hole, the 1986-newer externally balanced has an approx 2.125" piloting hole.

Thanks guys I called the company today and yep your right it is externally balanced but as you guys mentioned I can use whatever 400 externally balanced flywheel i can find where i was nervous that it had to be matched to the harmonic balancer or some crud like that. OrangeFJ please pm me a price for yours. I am early in my search and hopefully can find one local to prevent shipping but so far each time I come begging to you so I can get back on my way!! :D

Edit: - Downey, Good to know that Chevy wouldn't have let a person screw that up even if they tried. I didnt try to mount it because i had caught it early.......

FYI ... be careful with blanket statements regarding 383's being externally balanced. Many aftermarket cranks are now available with 3.75" strokes and internal balancing.

Also, Chevy did NOT make bolting internal/external balanced parts foolproof. Yes, they changed bolt patterns in '86 when going to a one piece real main seal but that had nothing to do with engines using 400 cranks which were out of production by then.

Thanks i had seen through tons of searching that it was possible to be either and that is why i varified with the company rather than go with my thought. Thanks though becuase I suppose it could have been viewed that way by another member searching months from now!! :meh:

I finally learned the whole if it has the step out of the harmonic balancer that was a giveaway and mine did where my 350 donor motor of course didnt.

I have this water pump on my shelf that had 10 miles on it from the donor motor and hoped you guys could tell me if it is a short or a long. I am guessing short but ?
