Check engine, TRAC Off, VSC Off light combo meaning

I had all three of these lights come on and it took me quite a bit of hunting to figure out what they really meant. So I figured I would post this for future ref.

When any check engine fault occurs the check engine light will come on and as a precaution the system will turn off VSC and TRAC which will then light those indicators as well.

The fault can be anything from a loose gas cap to something more serious.

Since VSC and TRAC are off it is best to figure things out and get the code cleared as soon as possible.

In my case the code was P0456 which is likely a loose gas cap. Glad I have a code reader and now it's riding in the cruiser with me in case it happens again.

Thanks for posting about this... Along with a severe change in weather 80 deg F. here in Texas in Feb turned into 28 deg in about 5 hours as a front rolled in. Woke up to ice on all the trees and slick streets.... got to love Tx weather!

Anyway, my check engine light and the VSC Trac and VSC off lights were all on together. I grabbed the ODB2 reader and low and behold it had a P0456 code which equates to what my code readers states as "very small evaporative leak" ie. a gas cap or something similar. I erased/cleared the code for now and all three lights went off.

I'm thinking the fast change in temp and barometric pressure change caused my gas cap to leak by. I'm going to see if the code comes back and if so I'll start with replacing what appears to be the original 2003 cap.

I'll post back if different. Thanks again for the post brizzle; you were right that certain engine codes must force VCS off and lights on.

Got this combo today and the dtc code was for P1441, P1444, and P2440, this sent the 100 into a limp mode.

Cleared the code in tech and it hasn't come back yet after 30 min of driving.

Was it a fluke or will these faults comeback? Should i just get a bypass kit and install it as a preventative measure?

Giving this string a bump, dash lit up like the Griswold's this morning. CEL/VSC/TRAC. Haven't been able to run diagnostic yet. In limp mode as well...

Just to add, my truck is a 2006. since i cleared the code in early November, it hasn't come back. I figure that what i experienced will come back and is related to the secondary air system being on its way out.

anyone have any experience wit the cheap $70 ebay bypass kit?

yest. my 06 lx470 did the same same thing and went into limp mode . i did overfill it, park it , and has gotten 28F. i d/c'd the NEG side batt, reset lights. i will check codes & get a OEM gas cap today and not overfill . Will update / followingthis thread . TY to all. Great Forum.

I have same CEL and both VSC codes. My scanner show P0456 code also. Truck runs fine-- how can you tell if you are in limp mode?
Any other suggestions?

Limp mode feels real, real sluggish. Engine doesn't want to rev. Truck doesn't want to go fast.

I need to get on the forums more than I have lately.

I've had this issue on my 03 land cruiser for sometime. Runs fine.

Got a new oem gas cap to try, reset the ecu. All 3 lights vanished until I drove for about 10 minutes and all 3 came back on.

Could a wheel sensor cause this?

I had the codes read a while back and really couldn't determine where the fault may be from.

Any other help/advice? Thanks gents!

Received my annual P2445 – Pump Stuck OFF Bank 1. No limp mode. Most likely related to the change in ambient temp up here in the north east. Cleared the code and it has not returned.

Anyone have any experience with bypass kits available on ebay?
