Cheap rear bumper

i spent about $150 at my metal yard for my front bumper material.

-2x6x1/4 wall aprox. 6' long
-10' 1 3/4" dom .120 wall
-10' 1 1/2" dom .120 wall
-2 8" pieces pf 3/4"x3" plate for the mounting points w/ cuts
and a scrap of 16g. sheet metal to chop my rear quarters

sounds like you need to find a new supplier

supplier is sims metal, you might be able to find them relatively local, they are a big big company

Alright guys. Since I posted up when this thread started we have been busy working on a prototype rear bumper. We decided to take a look at making a rear bumper that could be made using our manufacturing process, which has also turned into making a front bumper, to help lower the cost.I don't have any pricing info yet, I guess it depends if you like what we have come up with, then we can figure production and one-off costs, DOM and HREW steel pricing.

I have a few pics of the rear. Its just tacked up so so we can easily modify with out wasting tube. Let us know.

Also we are trying to use all of the factory mounting holes with out cutting any rivets.

We are planning to add 2 more plates to the left and right of the hitch, just to help hide more of the frame. Only a small amount of trimming is need for the receiver hitch. We don't like the idea of cutting the cross member out. Plus we need to use the cross member mounting locations.

I think that the quarter panel protection needs to tie into the frame. w/o that i think that if you were to hit the side it would do more damage to the quarter panel. other then that i think it looks like a great bumper. nice, easy, functional, and light!!!!

Top section of the quarter protection is WAAAYY too tall for my tastes. I'd like to see it about the same distance top-to-bottom from the center tube; ie 6" center-to-center on the bottom section as well as 6" center-to-center on the top.

and possibly an integrated hitch. otherwise it looks alright.

I agree. It does offer more protection from the side but don't see needing it that high.

We have planned a side support tube similar to the one we already use on the pickup and 4runner bumpers. Even with the 2 main tubes, the weight of the 60/62 could allow flex in this design. This side support was not added at this time until we nail down the outside design and shape. We have in mind 16 bolts using all factory holes.

Some of the FJ60 input suggested more side protection. But these commits will help us build what the custom will want. So keep them coming.

Would you be considering pick up points for a Hi-Lift jack as either part of the basic design, or an option? Also, attachment points for clevis shackles? (Doesn’t hurt to ask now does it?)

I like the design, but would like to see attachment points for towing, hi-lift jack points, and integrated hitch. Also side protection looks a bit high for my taste.

Attatcment point back to the frame are the orange circles

Rear stinger like Jim's is the black and attatches at the orange circle.

So hows it coming jim? I really like the look of what you made, just finalize it so i can decide to pull the trigger on one or not.

If i buy a premade bumper it means my stash of DOM can be put to other uses.

Looking at the side view the back of the bumper is all in one plane.....would you consider following the body lines more?

I agree with some of the other comments, a bit too high on the wrap around. The body has a crease there that you could follow. And damage potetial is a real concern.

I like the direction you took with it tho, enough different to not be a carbon copy. The fitment of your cuts is excelent makes a huge difference in the strength of the joint, and shows the attention.

Just my thoughts, from someone who is looking at building his own this year. Props to ALL who are putting in the time and effort to come up with new products.
