Cheap rear bumper

the answer to your question is, big companies can't find someone to work for free. I would guess if you combine the total US sales of FJ60 rear bumpers from all builders it wouldn't excede 200 units. A big company would need to purchase these for about 150.00 to make margin. As a manufacturer do you risk the 50 to 100 hours time spent on developement , of a 150.00 bumper, prototypes, drawings, jig building etc, to ultimately generate about $30 profit per unit on about 30 to 40 sales the first year.

This man speaks the truth...

It would be a gamble. I believe wagon owners are a dedicated breed. But, it takes alot of work/time to build one at a time. And, it takes alot of work/money to farm out many.

Quick, cheap, quality...Pick two.

i chose ron dogs. i appreciate a true artisan

quality. period. put it on the truck and use it.

i guess i could have bought some off the shelf unit but ronnie let me plan and DECIDE what i wanted on the bumper.

custom for me

that alone is worth it

trust boys i will post pics, but i ain't comin' to your house to mop up the drool.

this is a great thread!
I cant wait to see the product that comes out of it!
The price on the bumpers that are available has shot me out of the market! Im HOUSE POOR!
Im looking into building my own, possibly.

Nice work 2 bad (as always...Im a big fan), on both the bumper and the chair!

so far i must say that i really like the design of the bumper you have come up with 2 bad.
cant wait to see the end result!

well let me say......with the hydro bender i'm looking at, these will/should definitly come into play soon.

anyone ever bend 2" .120 wall tube without hydro :crybaby:

i'll try to get something done in the next couple days

and my "solid rock-ing" chair cause i knew someone would ask about it ;)

it kicks back perfect and the front of the springs makes for exellent foot rest.

:grinpimp:

I hope you used DOM tubing for safety purposes ;p

Hey third coast, thanks for the props and the trust you give me to make your rig hardware - I just know you'll love this bumper!! then all your buddies will be ordering - sweet!!:D

Almost forgot - I measured for the jerry can/cooler holder and the cooler holder would be kinda small if I made it to accomodate only two cans? I was thinking put the cans either one on each side of the spare or both side by side in front of the spare (open the gate to access) let me know!

Jim, i cant wait to see how this turns out. I also have a 1" body lift and plan to cut the quarters ala brokenparts, so if this turns out well you can put me down for one just like his.

Keep up the good work and i anxiously await pics.

-Matt

I'm thinking a simple rectagular tube would be a good cheap rear bumper. If I can find something about the dimensions of the pic below that would work. Simple straigt bumper with tow tube integrated to get the the tow bar out from under the stock bumper. Plus 2 d rings welded on at the frame points.

what kills me about bumpers like this is what some companies want for them. Basically that is a 2x8ish piece of steel with some square holes with mounts welded in and the ends nipped off. Not to be a jerk but that's a bumper I could fab up in a weekend. The other problem is that overall it doesnt offer much protection other than backing up into a tree and would act more like an anchor going over a rock at a steep angle...

Plus, the weight of a piece of 2x8 that long is way more than necessary. Thats why i want tube, and minimal tube at that. I dont want my rig to weigh as much as an 80 in trail trim.

I used that pic just as an example of the basic shape. And I agree it should be easy to fab up yourself which is why I think it could be a real cheap alternative to other rear bumpers. I'd use a slightly smaller shape for an fj60, maybe 1.5"x4.5"?

I don't rock crawl so I don't really need more protection than that. But I would like to have my hitch reciver up at the level of the bumper instead of under it. And two solid welded in tow points. I think I'll ask my metal fab guy how much he'd charge to cut and weld that up for me.
