Hey All,

This might sound silly, and definitely embarrassing to ask, but I'm wondering if any of you LC experts in the Central Texas (I'm in Austin) area would be willing to be a 'Land Cruiser Tutor' and help me with a few repair projects, and repairs and maintenance in general? I've had my cruiser (1995 80)for a couple years now and up to this point have been a 'cut a check' guy to get things fixed, which isn't cheap, especially in the long-term, and really isn't what I envisioned for myself when I got the truck.

I really want to learn to do my own maintenance and repairs, but as I've never worked on cars at all, aside from changing a few spark plugs and installing a radio, I'm afraid of mucking things up trying to go the YouTube/online tutorial route. Hand's on training suits me best.

So, that said, I thought maybe someone in the area might be willing to set aside a few hours here and there to guide me through some projects. I want to do the work myself, but under the tutelage of someone that actually knows what they're doing and can help walk me through it. I don't have a full complement of tools yet, or a decent garage setup, so your place would be preferred.

I'll be happy to provide the beer and pizza, or whatever food or beverage you prefer. I'm also willing to pay a little as well if that's needed. I just can't afford the shop rates anymore, and given that I use the truck on search and rescue missions, I think being able to fix or troubleshoot in the field would be a good idea.

Here's the current work that's needed (that I know of):

Rear wheel seal leaking on driver side
Parking brake doesn't work at all
Oil and fluids probably need changing

Sooo...anyone want to take this old grasshopper under their wing?

The first two problems are probably one in the same, leaky seal contaminated brake pads so that's an easy fix. Sorry I am no longer in Texas so I can't help you out, but I promise you, you CAN change the fluids on your own.

Just set aside 2 wrenching sessions. The first do the engine and trans, and the second do the diffs and transfercae. Just have the fluids and parts (crush washers, etc) on hand and ready to go before you start. drain and fill engine oil and trans oil will take you less than an hour taking your time.

Pretty sure @LS1FJ40 is a Texan

Wrong. I lived in Texas for four years. Couldn't wait to get out of there. Austin is cool as sh!t though!

@arcteryx is in the Austin area. He's a good dude.

Honestly, these rigs are very easy to work on. I would t consider myself much of a mechanic but I've done just about everything on my rig. Not much I wouldn't do.

Get a FSM. It is well laid out. Be patient, one step at a time.
