Hello all,

I got so sick of the crappy little center console on the 79 series I finally decided to do something about it. Now for me living in South California, I really do not need the rear heater so after taking that out as well as the stock console I took a tuffy box (for a 40 series) and I am modifying it so I can still use the parking brake.

Has anyone done this before or know of someone that makes a center console for a 70 seris like the tuffy box. I realize this is a little late since I have already gotten out my plazma cutter and tig welder, but I do have more than one 70 series.

Well if no one is aware of something available I will be posting pictures of my modified Tuffy Box if anyone is looking to do the same or wants to buy a modified one from me.

Pictures will be posted on http://westcoastcruisers.org under tech pages (give me a week or so).

Cheers,

Michael

Thanks Stone,

This one will be perfect for my right hand drive BJ74 :)

Oh ok...

Ahh that makes sense that the parking brake stay in the same place what was I thinking. No I am not pulling your leg, it is an extremely nice one as well with all options, and I do mean all options. has auto instead of manual and very low mileage. Ok that is all I am saying on this board, before I get a rash response wanting to know how, and people who don't know what they are talking about telling me it can't be done. I already have all my others titled and legal in California this one will be as well.

G'Day,

Michael

Looking forward to seeing pics of that one, Michael! You'll love the extra room on the BJ74, and the 13BT. The cable lockers operate quietly and seamlessly. Try and track down some half doors for the rear if you are planning on taking off the roof. If you are considering a soft top, I believe Wayne has some made up (is this right, Wayne?). Congrats!

Thanks Stone..

Sure let me all about it before I have it, tease tease tease :) I already have the donor door from my parts 70, but thanks for confirming for me. I will gladly post pics as soon as I get up let see about 35 days and counting, woo hoo!! I am already getting excited. I think I will be taking the top of for sure but having air does make is nice if it gets too hot out in the desert. So did I hear correctly that you are selling yours? if so why?

Thanks,

Michael

What...? Who told you about that? I've only fleetingly mentioned it to a couple of close friends, and even then I wasn't really serious about it...just toying with the idea. Man is the Cruiser community ever a small one! :)

I'm a bit attached to mine, so I don't think I'll be selling her anytime soon. I've gone in there and sorted out the things that needed attention, and I've almost got her set up the way I want her...so she will most likely still be mine for a while yet. But if someone comes along and makes me a crazy offer...well that's a different story. :D Cheers.

Or was that question directed to Wayne?

yes small world..

No that question was directed at you Stone :D

Let me tell a story of how small of a world it really it, especially for BJ70's in USA. I showed up at Pismo this year, me and 80 series, towing a trailer with my 86' Bj70 on it, i quickly found the diesel crowd the first day and meet some folks I had only talked to before. within the first hour Wayne was able to tell me more about the history of my 70 series than even the previous owner had known about. After that the buy I bought my 70 from showed up at pismo, and the next day the guy I bought my parts 70 from showed up as well. So you are correct it is a very small world. I would bet that you have alread seen pictures of my Bj74....think about it for a minute... really low miles and excellent condition ;)

Cheers Mate

Stoney,
i can not believe you are even joking about selling you 74... that is one sweet truck, unless of course you are thinking about a HJ61 or a HDJ81...
cheers

Thanks, Wayne...HDJ81 is on the back of my mind, but probably not for a little while. :) Like I said, I almost have it set up the way I want it. Just finished putting together a circuit that allows me to switch my Solar Converter from "load balance" to strict "step-down conversion" mode without having to remove and switch wires. I'll be putting it in tomorrow. The idea is to have the Converter in load balance mode if I'm running my truck everyday or at least every few days, and then flip it over to step-down conversion mode if I have to leave my vehicle for a few days or more without running it. I think this will solve the problem of the Converter drawing down the batteries in load balance when the truck is not running. Cheers.

this sounds very interesting, let me know how it works out...
cheers
BTW, my first HDJ81 should be arriving in March if all goes well. i will be flying out to drive this one home. i am thinking of getting together with the "boys" on the way back...
this will be the high milage one so it won't be perfect but it should be pretty nice unit. if the wife likes it then this one will replace the HJ61 i sold on her...

Hi Wayne:

Looking forward to seeing that 81...hopefully I'll have the day off the day you drive it through town. Maybe a visit to the shop and having the fluids changed and having a once over before the long drive back to Alberta would be a good idea. Would also be a good opportunity for all of us to have a real close look at that beast. Cheers. (By the way, you sold your wife's truck? I guess she's got first dibs on that 81 then, eh? :))

If you want more space in the console and want to maintain the factory look there is an OEM tray/ floor that you can bolt into the console (once heater is removed) to give you a bunch of space.. the non rear heat J7s came set up like that.. I have one such console in the shop.. pretty neat, and the cavernous storage compartment is hidden under the removable top tray.

I am sure the tuffy will stand up better than the OEM plastic and lockable is nice too..

i bought her a 1988 full load HJ61 with lift, cable lockers 5 spd and roof rack and 68,000 km to replace hers, as long as it doesn't sell then i am back in the house for a while...
mind you she isn't a big fan of the standard so i might have to find her a auto.

message to self, QUIT SELLING HER PERSONAL VEHICLES!!

cheers
