Center caps on FJ60 wheels

So after 20 years of running FJ60 wheels on my 77 FJ I finally want to add center caps to the rears for a finished look. I assume the caps press in and are held in place with spring tension however there doesn't appear to be any space for these clips as the rim sits flat and flush on the hub. I would imagine if I pressed the center cap in place on the wheel as I tightened the wheel on the hub it would simply push the center cap off.

Unless I am missing something (or my wheels are in fact not factory FJ60 chrome wheels) what are my options? Grind off the clips and weld the cap in place? Grind off the clips, epoxy the cap in place? Fit a 1/4" wheel spacer and relief cut it to allow space for the clips? These all seem less than satisfactory.

I yield to the board... what is the correct solution?

I’m sure plenty of 40 series owner know about FJ60 rims. You could post or search the FJ60 chat room for info as well.

Are your caps FJ40 hubcaps or FJ60?

Cityracerllc.com sell brand spankin’ new 16” rims with clips for FJ40 hubcaps. There aren’t cheap, but they are oh-so cool.

You have identified a real problem - not sure of a good solution. FJ60/2 center caps are incredibly ill-thought-out. No room for thick-wall lug wrenches with them on, and cannot easily pre-install when installing the wheels. Later ones are painted, so they scratch. The same flunkie Toyota engineer in charge of dim dome lights and shaky mirrors apparently designed this as well.

The 60 series rear caps are just to make semi float rears look like full float rears.

Well it would appear the plot thickens... and my question is moot. After 20 years of running these rims it would appear that upon closer inspection they are not FJ60 wheels. (the giveaway is that the valve stem are behind the spokes and not in front.)

No matter. Now to find a set of replacements.... or sell the new center caps... or both...

IIRC a couple of whacks with a rubber mallet seat the caps on the wheel centers of the stock rims. Never had any issues with them popping off -
