After coughing up $100 for the privilege of having my local dealer plug in my truck to get the CEL code, I've decided I really need to do this myself. My truck is a 94. What OBD regime does it fall under, what sort of code reader is recommended by the collective, and how's it done?
TIA

Henry, your 80 falls under the OBDI catagory. So a paper clip and code list would be your best option.

As far as I know there is not a plug and play option for OBDI systems.

Holy sh*t!

They didn't "plug in" anything other than a paperclip-like jumper wire into the diagnostics port (and then went and counted the flashes in the dash). :frown:

See, now I feel worse!

Where is the diagnostics port?

There is one under the hood on the firewall I believe, but I search should yield results with pictures.

They make a fancy flashy one for ODBI that fits on the diag port in on firewall, which just counts the blinks and puts it in a fancy LCD screen that you still have to go look up..... or..... like other said pack a paperclip and print out the codes ;)

yep, US PS firewall. Again search will yeild the pins to jump... something like TE1-T0 or something..... may even be in the FAQ :hillbilly:

Google "Toyota trouble codes". First result will have procedure and a list of code translations.
