If I install the CDL switch, is there any need to do the CDL Pin 7 Mod? I don't understand everything I know about these mods. Are both mods desireable and necessary? Which is the most desireable if only one is done?

Both are desireable. CDL switch is necessary and most desireable.

Pin 7 mod is an enhancement and only done in conjuction with installation of the CDL switch. The purpose is to allow the driver to have full control over when the Center Diff is locked or unlocked; High or Low range. With the pin 7 mod, you have this control *and* you have the tranny shift points that Mr T programmed for your auto tranny in Low and in High.

The alternative to the Pin 7 mod is to pull a plug off the transfer case giving you control of the locking/unlocking but always using the High range tranny shift points.

If you don't pull the plug, and you don't do the Pin-7 mod, then the CDL switch allows you to lock the center diff while in High but it doesn't allow you to UN-lock the center diff when in Low.

Wayne,

There was a pretty good thread on this a month or so ago, and it talked about the in and outs a bit. I don't think you would want to do the pin 7 mod. without the CDL switch.. if that's what you were asking. With the pin 7 mod., the CDL will not automatically engage when shifting into Lo.

To answer your question, if nothing else, do the CDL switch, that'll be the biggest upgrade. The other mods are cool but not necessary, and they can't be done without first installing the switch.

Thanks very much for your replies....... now I know.

Did both mods last weekend, took about 15 minutes.

The hardest part was standing on my head under the dash trying to get the PIN 7 out without resorting to wire clippers.

Doc, 15 mins seems pretty good. Good job!

[edit: just found the installation instructions again, they are on Slee but under the product listings, not in the tech section, like the pin 7 instructions...]

Thanks
Eric

I just ordered the CDL switch from C-Dan yesterday. I then went and read all the instructions on Slee's site. If you are going to install the CDL switch I defiantly recommend doing the 7-pin mod. It is very easy to do and you will now have complete control over the CDL. By the way kudos to C-Dan for figuring this out and for the great price on the parts I got.

well, just did mine.
CDL switch went right in. Had it in in about 20 mins or so including going back to printing the instructions and all.
Couple of comments: you need to remove the end connector on the harness, it's not just the shortcircuit wire that pulls out ...
I took the 2 ashtray screws out, didn't remember if it was needed or not.
Go slow on removing the bezel.

Then did the pin 7 mod. Took about an hour cuz the darn terminal lock drove me nuts. Do read carefully the instructions at the beginning of the EWD about taking the terminal out. Even with that it took me a while to figure out how to unlock the terminal after having removed the secondary locking thing. Used a small screwdrive (about 1mm) and had to insert it on top of the terminal (between the terminal and the outside surface), coming from the front of the connector, while pulling the terminal from the rear. Trivial when you know but frustrating when you don't know where the locking tab is... I had been rummaging towards the center of the connector -wrong side.

Anyways, now it's all working. Full control over CDL in both high and low, hopefully with correct shift points...

yea!

On to the mall now for some serious curb wheelin' !

And kudos to Dan for fast as usual delivery and for helping us all out with good advice, and good prices.
Not so many kudos to Toyota for asking a lot of $$ for one lousy little switch though...
