Hi mudders,

I've probably read all the CDL threads out there and I just can't seem to figure out what's going on. I was out wheeling one day with my CDL on and it just turned off randomly. This is on an unlocked 93 LC with 158k miles. I have the CDL switch installed. No 7 pin mod

I have done the following troubling shooting and I just can't seem to find the answer. Any thoughts?
  • Found blown fuse ------------------ *REPLACED, STILL NOT WORKING
  • Key on "on", push CDL ------------------ *RELAY CLICKS BUT NO WHIR
  • Removed CDL switch sensor; use paperclip ------------------ *CDL LIGHTS up
  • New CDL sensor = AutoZone Part # JA449 // ------------------ *REPLACED, NOT WORKING, REPLACED W/ OLD OEM
  • Cleaned OEM CDL switch sensor ------------------ *NO DIFFERENCE -- LOCKERS FLASHED ON ONCE
  • Took apart the CDL actuator ------------------ *IT WAS COVERED IN GUNK, CLEANED & REINSTALLED..NO DIFFERENCE (it looked like the transfer case oil was very old, replaced with new fluids)
  • Spent 30 minutes driving in figure 8s & pushing the CDL + going into Low gear ------------------ *NOTHING
  • Took out the CDL actuator again and did 9v battery test ------------------ *DIDNT CRANK OVER
  • Got a new actuator & OEM CDL switch sensor (looked clean on the inside) from pick n pull, tested 9v battery and it worked ----------------- *CDL ISNT ENGAGING STILL, NO WHIR
  • Key on "on", push CDL ------------------*RELAY CLICKS BUT NO WHIR from Actuator

  • SOLVED - REPLACED RELAY --- relay clicked but it was all burnt. Got a new one and good as now. God damn that was a lot of trouble shooting.... Thanks Mud!

Just a grenade lobbed your way.....clearly you're doing the due diligence here:

W/o your CDL switch, can you drop into low range & let the logic box lockup the CDL?

I ask as whenever my "frosting/mod" crap gives me static, I default to the OE setup just so I can isolate it to a certain level if I need to go full EWD on myself.

Just a grenade, sounds like you been there already, IDK.

Same thing here. No lite comes on, however you can feel the difference locked or open. I don't hear any whir. Shifting to lo made no difference, still no lite but it does lockup. No lite no axle lok is my present boggle. Comes on if truck is turned off and restarted. No od lite or ect either. But both functions do operate. Wtf gives us something to do eh?

Did you do any maintenance prior to this problem?

The CDL indicator lamp also ties into the ABS ECU. A failure in that ECU or in the wiring could be providing a ground path which would light the CDL indicator lamp.

Going into low. Does not lock my CDL.

Sounds like your gauge fuse is out?

No maintence prior. I was on the trails when the lights went off. I did blow a fuse... would that be in indicator that something went bad with my wiring?

Is the fuse you replaced still good or did it blow too?

Is the CDL switch you added a true OEM CDL switch or did you re-purpose some other switch? Have you confirmed that it is fully seated in the connector?

It's a OEM cdl switch. It was working fine until last weekend. I'll try and double check.. Thanks for the help!

UPDATE: Looks like the CDL relay was fried even though the it still clicked. Will be ordering a new one part #(89531-60010).
