Hey guys,

I DD my rig for the most part, and I don't like the idea of permanently mounting a CB. Does anyone have any suggestions for a part time user such as myself? I'm planning on doing HIH and I know I will need it. Plus when we do the monthly rides, I know it's easier to communicate with one.

Thanks.

Great, thanks. I wouldn't mind installing one of those magnetic antennas for times when I need it. I can run the cable and just leave it in there. Any suggestions on that?

Then you may want to look into at setup like this. The Midland is another popular model that is completely portable. If you look at the link and below at the "frequently bought together", you'll see a combination that is probably closer to your wants.

Ya, I looked at that one originally and wasn't sure if that was a good brand. My uncle had a Cobra CB from the 70's that still worked in the 90's, and my first radar detector was Cobra.

Thanks for the assistance!

I started taking the online course for the HAM test but have slacked off lately. Definitely would like to participate in that.

So would I need both, or just the Baofeng?

I'd go for both. This way you're prepared for whatever form of communication is being used at any given time. I think Ben @fireball did Hundreds in the Hills a few years ago. Maybe he can chime in as far as what was the preference for that event.

Good call. Thanks Greg, and everyone else.

I have the Midland CB for use in our cars, it is way NOT loud enough to be useful in my, or any truck for that matter.
If you're going portable CB, it must be the Cobra.
Yes, HAM is where its at! But, I like the CB for on the road...

What @Pacer and @joabmc said. For the money, the Cobra 75 WXST is a great deal. It has great volume from the speaker (good enough that you'll turn it off on the highway to stop the trucker jabbering) and the hand held mic/radio is easily disconnected from the unit in 5 seconds. Install is a snap and range is pretty decent with a good antenna and proper tuning.

Thanks everyone.

Hopefully one wheeling weekend I can pick someones brain on tuning it.

@maxse01 I've got a book and an SWR meter you can borrow to tune it if you'd like. It only takes about 15 minutes. Just make sure you install an antenna with a tunable tip.

Thank you!
