My 1991 FJ80 has 143k on it. I believe the cats are the originals. I haven't had any loss of power (I think), though the exhaust smells a little like....butt.

Tha catalytic converter "should" last the life of the vehicle as long as the engine is running well. Even a slight misfire will destroy a cat. If yours has gone bad, you need to check some things out and determine if the engine is running properly.

I took my 92 FJ80 to the muffler shop I've always gone to today. Asked them for a quote on new exhaust from the headers back. Told them I thought my cats were plugged. No reason to think so other than my truck is 23 years old and 234k on it. He back flow (or back pressure) tested it from the #2 sensor location and said it was perfect. Said my original exhaust didn't need to be touched. Ordered new O2 sensors since those were original and the #2 sensor nuts were rusted and gone. I guess power washing the undercarriage 2-3 times per week for 23 years to get the salt off of it has paid off. :)
