Was wheeling at a semi-nearby rock garden / ledge fest yesterday.. After breaking my second pinion earlier this year, I got a fine-spline pinion third member from a friend, and figured my troubles were over..

I crawled through a crevice, and decided to have a little fun on the way up, so I layed into the stupid pedal to build up some heat in the tires.. It started to climb, and then slide back, so I let off the throttle as it slid back.. BANG!

I was surprised, bummed (left my spare 3rd at home), but was thinking "Damn, I snapped a fine spline, that's some decent breakage - the guys on 'mud will want to see this"

Only to go back and retrieve the pinion, to find that it was a COARSE spline.. grrrrrr... Damn, nothing special to report.

Winched it up to the top (rear locked, as usual), disco'd the D/S, and drove it out backwards in FWD.

But, at least I found this BEFORE the round-up.. I want to make sure my feces are as co-aligned as I can get them before that!

Oh, if I should come across just a fine-spline pinion, is it a bad idea (for a trail rig) to just swap the pinion into a third member i have, right? (Yeah, setup the gears of course)

Bad idea to mix gearsets..

So what's the story on the friend?
Don't know WTF a fine spline is?

The guy I got it from is really a good dude, I'd bet he thought the same as I did "It's got the round pinion flange, it must be a fine-spline". He bought the third assembled, and kept it as a spare. When I broke #2, he said I could have his, and just to get him another one, he didn't care coarse or fine spline.

If i had paid like $300 for the third I might be pissed, but I didn't.

Anyone got one?
