Now I know what it feels like to spend what ever it takes to fix a pet. My GSP which will be 1 tomorrow got hit by a motorcycle last night. My neighbor was not going very fast but didn't see her at all in the dark. I was in the street trying to get her and watched the whole thing which was miserable. He went down but is ok. My pup is stoic. She is going to surgury tomorrow to fix her broken leg by a great surgeon. A plate forever and she should be as good as new. I'm just thankful it wasn't worse. I truely thought picking her up off the pavement last night would have been last time.

I didn't know how I'd feel spending thouands on my pet but I didn't care what the cost was. So much for cruiser parts for the next year.

They become such a part of the family, I know I've spent a ton on my little Boston. I was hestitent about getting her since I've alway had Rotties but my wife said no to the big sog so got the Boston Terrier and she's awesome.

I hear you, I have 10 cats and 3 dogs. Once I spent $300 on a stray kitten that had a ruptured eye that had to be removed and fixed. We found her a great home, she was a sweet little kitten after the eye was fixed which got rid of her pain. Would of been cheaper to have her put down but that's not my thing.

Wes -

When you say GSP, are we talking German Shepherd?

Let me tell you friend, I have had my old Shepherd (Haans aka Mr. Chompy) at CSU multiple times for hip surgery - he had displasia.

If you need any help Wes - give me a call, I am on the RS roster. I work 1 day a week at a vet clinic and my vet is on faculty at CSU's vet hospital...

i keep saying that i will not spend more than a grand on my pet but when Billy was in trouble the wallet was open for business (as long as it would have given him QUALITY life extension.
sorry to here about your pup, that must of sucked...
cheers

Thanks I appreciate it. My neighbor across the street whom is a vet saw her almost immediatly. She called the surgeon she knows which also happened to work on both my friends dogs that works at the Dumb Friends League. I feel I'm in really good hands at the VRCC .

It is really hard to think about spending large amounts on vet bills, until you are faced with a decision, then it becomes easy. I had 2 cats. One got sick and we were short on money. We were hoping that she would just get better. Long story short she died in my lap as I raced to the Emergency Vet. I'll never forgive myself for that one. Later that year my other cat got really sick and I told myself I would spend whatever it cost to make sure he got better. If that Is my pennance, then I got off easy. We spent about $1500 all said and done. Best money I ever spent.

Vet bills are hard. I have for the first time in my life a dog. A nice mellow retired racing greyhound. Dogs are not cheap. Just spent $400 in the last month on pretty standard stuff.

Gawd- I'm pretty dang lucky I guess.

I thought $150 to doctor up a torn off toe-nail was bad!

Good luck to you and your dog.
When my Malinois was 8 months old he pushed through the front screen door and ran out to the highway where he commenced to hunt cars. He ended up bouncing off the front end of an Accord doing 55 mph and luckily only broke his left rear femur.
Unfortunately, it was a clean break and very hard to set. It was a rough four months getting him back in one piece. And a couple of times I was convinced (as was the Vet) that I was going to have to put him down.
Dogs are true fighters though. Three surgeries; two major infections and a total of thirteen surgical pins later, that dog is as good as new and I would have never guessed that things would have turned out as well as they did.
At the time, I was an LT in the Army and struggling to keep up with my student loans. I ended up maxing out my credit cards to cover his vet bills. Looking back on it all, it was probably one of the best expenditures I've made. This dog is one of my greatest joys. The Vet bill will hurt for a while, but turning your back on a loyal friend I think would hurt for a lot longer. You’re doing the right thing.

I wish you and the doggie a speedy and happy recovery. I just put my doggie to sleep last week - she was hit by a car - happend 5 houses down from me - if it was light out I would have seen it. I will never forget the noise. I will miss her. It has been the hardest week I have ever had and I would never wish it on anyone.

Glad to hear yours is going to be fine. I wish you many happy years together!

Here is a pic of little Greta before surgery this morning. Sucks her first birthday will be in the doggie Hospital today.

Just sent my pooch into the vet to have a growth removed and her teeth cleaned
When asked if there are any complications what would you like us to do? I said ANYTHING you have to. They truly are a mans best friend. Dogs love cruisers

I just droped $800 on my 12 year old lab to have 2 growths removed......it didnt bother me one bit to spend the money. I have paid vet bill for some ex's dogs......because they were not able to, again........didn't bother me a bit. Dogs are just the best critter made and they give so much back to people.

I spent close to 5K on another old lab of mine, I was told it might by me/her another 6 months........she lived for 2 more years........money well spent IMOP.
