'Morning,

I have a '23 460 Blackline with OEM roof rack and am in the market for a cargo carrier. I am familiar with the name Thule but are there others that are better? Obviously "better" is subjective but I am looking for something with at least 15 cubic feet and lockable. I'd appreciate any insight. My search of "cargo" is bringing back posts dealing with the interior of the GX.

Yakima makes nice ones.
We have their “Sky Box” 18 cf…holds a ton, and has held up well.
Some (the lighter Carbonite series) are on sale now.

Can’t go wrong with either Thule or Yakima. I strongly suggest you go up a size to the ~18cf range. Not much more expensive and much more versatile with what you can put inside. They look huge by themselves but are much smaller on the vehicle.
 
Used to sell Yakima, both are sufficient as long as you don't want to push the weight.

Granted you can always mount those to aftermarket hard core roof racks.
 
Aside from 15 cu.ft of space do you need length for ski's or other sport equipment?
I purchased one from Sears about 15 years ago for extra camping gear on our old 100 series Landcruiser. It worked great, but didn't use it much. The main reason for buying it was my daughter wanted to bring a friend on our week long camping trip and the Hundy didn't have enough room for a fourth person plus the extra gear.

Also check used. A lot of people like myself will get them and wind up not using them as much as thought and generally don't have a lot of space to store them when they take them off their cars.
 
This is mine - I have no idea which particular model it is but echoing the sentiment to try and find one used. It's just just wide enough for a carry on suitcase, and with the aftermarket rack, has enough weight capacity for 6 of them. It's also long and tall enough to take several full sets of snowboards/skis and boots, leaving the inside clear for people or more things. All in all - not bad for $200 and the best part is that my gas mileage hasn't really been impacted.

You can definitly find them used in various states, but if buying new I’ve always liked the look of the INNO’s. Very sleek.
 
I think no matter which brand you get they're all pretty similar in style and features. The only one that stands out from memory is Packasport, they're much heavier and stronger than the others due to the fiberglass construction and they're twice the price.

I would definitely buy used. They don't really wear out and you can find one for less than 50% of the retail price all day. If you're patient enough and aren't picky you can probably get them for around 25% new price. I've got some obsolete brand I picked up at a garage sale a while ago, I think I paid the equivalent of about $25-$30 for it. Having a full length box for snowboards and skis is really useful, and the lower profile even lets me fit into some parking garages. The only thing I would change about it is having a side opening box is a lot easier when trying to access stuff in the front, but it's not enough of a problem to make me want to buy a different one.

I’ve had great luck with the Thule. Drove 500 miles in non-stop deluge and never leaked a drop. I’d stick with a Thule or Yakima.
 
One note on purchasing used: check that you get keys and that the latches and locks work.
 
We've had a Yakima Rocketbox Pro 11 for ~5 years and it's been fine. It's a narrow box, so you can still put a bike rack next to it in the crossbars. It gets used infrequently but often sees a very long road trip when it does get used. I prefer to load them with light, soft things (tents, clothes, sleeping bags, etc) to limit the total weight. I've had lots of Yakima stuff over the years and it's all been good....never found a reason to pay more for Thule.
 
As I read these posts, things keep coming to me about when we had ours.
There is usually a speed limit they have when driving with them empty. Because of that, I would take it off when not using it.
I believe the speed limit on the Sears was 60 or 65 mph. I still did 70 mph, but not sure just how close to tearing it off the rack at speed I was.
It may just be a "save our company's butt" disclaimer by Sears in case one does fly off at higher speeds.

Also, if you get one DON"T FORGET YOUR NEW TOTAL HEIGHT when going into parking garages!!!!

The worst was an Isuzu Amigo, peeled the top like a tuna can... (worked at a bike shop in the 90s)

Also these things aren’t that hard to repair. My wife decided to save 15$ and go to a roller type car wash… bad idea. It ripped the rocket box off the rack bars on her Prius.. the bars were fine but the box cracked in a couple places. A few YouTube’s, a soldering iron, can of acetone and a piece of abs plastic/ metal screen later I had it back on and structurally sound!
Was surprisingly similar to Fiberglas repair.

Yep, I too used to work in a bike shop after my day job to get deals on my "toys" and tried to pull into our garage with my $4,500 bike on top. Fortunately I had the presence of mind to go slow and didn't do any real damage to the bike.
