Okay, so before getting flogged for not searching the boards first for advice, let me say I have searched and searched for only nebulous answers. I need a new carb, quickly. I DO NOT have the option to send mine in for a rebuild, so I need to look at alternatives. here are my questions. I am loooking at the weber kits. I live in colorado, about 6200 feet, my LC has a stock F engine with headers. Im not looking to set any land speed records, nor am I concerned (much ) about MPG. what I need to know, is in everyones opinion, what is the better choice...a weber 32/36, a weber 34/34 (??) or a weber 38/38? obviously many people are for these carbs and the same amount are against them...but being new to LC's doesnt mean im new to automotive, so I know some tuning will be in order for a good carb...im just asking which one is the best platform to start with, all things considered? thanks all!
 
In my sig line you can see my set up. I am only familiar with the 38/38, but it runs great down here. When I lived in Dgo it ran so so. I think it had much to do with the stock dizzy. The 38 only has a provision for plate? vacuum, and not manifold vacuum which you need to make the vacuum retard work right along with the computer. If you go with a Weber I would also change the dizzy. If your funds are limited, go with the junk yard H.E.I. I think that a none usa dizzy with the pertronix in it would make a hot set up too. I think alot of the dogging that the Webers have gotten may be due to the fact that people expect them to be a drop in replacement, when I believe there are more tuning issues involved. One of the reasons I went with the 38 is the mechanical secondary, no need to worry about diaphrams and whatnot.
 
I don't mean to give you a nebulous response to a specific question, but I must ask why wouldn't you purchase a rebuild kit from NAPA and get your f carb going? My NAPA didn't have mine in stock, but I picked it up the next day.

That would be my first choice too.

My second choice would be a Holley / Autocraft. They are cheap, plentiful and reliable.

The stock Aisan carb has a 38 mm primary and 40 mm secondary, if that helps.
 
Cobrasjj, NONE OF THE ABOVE!!!! Weber carburetors are designed for street use. They have no provision for baffling for off road use, and the only off roaders still using them are off roaders who know very little about float bowl design & breathing, or street off roaders, or off roaders who are tolerating alot of coughing, flooding, sputtering, and miserable drivability in off road terrain. Worse, nothing is made for them to fix the off road problems. Ever watched off road buggies in off road races sputtering on every bump, there's your proof. We've sold Holley 350's for a little over a zillion years now BECAUSE all the upgrade goodies are made for them (sealed baffles, chimneys that extend up to the top lid of the air cleaner, high altitude power valves, spring loaded needle valves, the works!!!!!). The only guy unhappy with a Holley is a guy who thought he could go wheelin with a "stock out of the box" Holley, which would have the same problem that Webers will always have. And I won't even address factory carburetors. If you guys want to just keep rebuilding them & loving em, be my guest!!!
 
So, Downey my Man, What does something like what your referring to cost?:confused:
 
Is the smaller truck avenger carb out of the question or does just nobody make an adapter for it?

Buy a non-usa carb for your toyota engine- easy peasy go with the japanesey. NO HASSLES
 
well I have a 72 fj with the stock F engine, thats probably a little tired by now. I would rebuild my carb if I had one of the right vintage, instead I have one date coded 1984, and its got plenty-o-extra vacuum ports and the linkage looks cobbled. Id buy a used one and have rebuild but I dont want to have my 'toy' down for so long.
 
look up cruiserparts.net under used parts: carbs, rebuilt, and sold $225
$100 core call them and tell them you need one for your truck and pay the core. either that or pay the Sphector off road price for a non-usa carb. Still probably cheaper and easier in the long run, time vs. money etc etc.
