I am not a fan of this guy's video on rebuilding front knuckles and I would never pay him to do mine. Mind you, I would never pay anyone because I do mine... 😉

1) Was he joking about the 2JZ? I would never put a 2JZ into an 80 series. The 1FZ-FE is a truck engine, meant for a truck: torque at low rpm. I do agree with his general sentiment regarding the 1FZ-FE though. It was an ok engine for the time....

2) I don't think 200 series were ever triple the price of the 80 series, when both were new. Comparing MSRP vs MSRP using real dollars. My LX450 had a MSRP close to $55K in 1996. That is over $110K in today's dollars.

3) I do agree with buying OEM parts in most cases.

4) I do agree that the 80 series can be a very expensive to maintain if you need to pay someone to maintain it for you.

@TheRealDeal124 had his 80 featured on the channel a few years ago.
And it was a much happier time when I had that super clean one. I went by his shop the other day to show him my new 07 120 series, one owner from California. I never went anywhere in my 80 as I'd planned, but driving from northern California back home to illinois was the best choice I've made since getting into these vehicles. Still miss my featured 80. I'll always have that video to look back on. And the Mudder on here who bought it!

I always thought of the Car Care Nut guy as the Bob Ross of mechanics. Very soothing tone in his videos.

He reminds me of a shop foreman I once worked with. He's quite a diagnostic talent. He may not know as much about 80s as a few here do but He knows a helluva lot about the entire Toyota/Lexus lineup.

Moral of the story, if own one of these do the work yourself or be prepared to pay.

Can’t that be said for literally every single vehicle lol?
100% and most things in life generally. The resources available to us nowadays online is immense and as long as you have the willingness to learn plus the tools and patience required almost anything anyone can do.

I would never have contemplated doing the HG on my 80 series when i had to but studied everything and successfully did it after buying a WS Manual, and that was the 1st time i'd ever done one.

last weekend a torsion spring on my garage door broke and i couldnt get my 80 out, bugger as it was a long weekend but is what it is. The garage door Co quoted close to $1k AU to come out and replace them but I ended up doing the job myself and the springs cost me less than $150AU and they were genuine springs. Their quote stated $550 just for the springs.......

I love this guy's youtube channel but he looks at things from a different point of view. He makes his living by fixing other people's problems and can't understand enthusiasts. Normal people drive the most cost effective vehicles that they wont ever have to pop the hood and definitely wont work on.

Enthusiasts drive vehicles that they look for reasons to work on. They enjoy it. TCCN sees it as his living and probably feels bad when someone shows up and pays him $3000 to reseal the knuckles on their 80. An enthusiast sees it as an opportunity to upgrade. Front locker, new axles and maybe 4.88s. Well that means the rear end has to be opened up. $5000 later, the enthusiast is happy and proud of what they just did.

The TCCN customer just had a major life disaster that has turned them against owning an 80 and regret buying it. That person should not have ever tried to drive a 30 year old vehicle.

I don't think in this instance the customer regrets buying it. I do think the customer wishes he paid a little less for the vehicle. I think for what was promised to the customer, a restored 80 that couldn't have been cheap, that they expected all maintenance to be up to date. Customer paid a premium and can't get behind the wheel and start living his adventurous dreams. Instead he has to drop another $10-15k in hopes of having a reliable rig, which it probably will be. It should be noted that the customer has other enthusiast cars and has no problem dropping off a 30 year old rig and "call me when it's done" type of deal.

Seems he mistakenly mixed up what engines came in what years in the very beginning of the video. That’s as far as I got but the early 80s had the 3FE and not the 1FZ. Maybe he can edit his video. 🤔

He pinned his comment as a correction for getting the engine wrong on the early models.

He knows the 3FE well. He was staring at a 1FZ valve cover sticker when he said that.
I've been in front of a camera myself. Something like that is very easy to do when you are presenting.

I highly recommend the 60 series video if you haven't already watched it. There's always something neat and old at his shop.

He understands enthusiasts. He's worked on more than one Century limousine.
Those are not owned by "normal" people.

He is warning uneducated buyers about the very real prospect of severe sticker shock when they need to pay someone to work on one of these.

Excellent video. Makes me feel as if I've lucked out (so far) with mine. I'm wondering what shop or shops have done the "restored" 80s that were poorly done, ending up at his garage.

I'm surprised TCCN had the guts to make another video even talking about Land Cruisers 😆. The backlash was pretty intense when he released the video on the 200 5.7L UR V8 head gaskets and general inferiority compared to the V8 UZ engines.
