Can starter failure cause internal engine damage

Vastly better than new motor time!

Basic psychology - would you rather hear "oh, I'm sure it's nothing" and then hear "oh, it's 5 grand", or "this is serious" and then "turns out it's 'only' going cost a grand"?

Glad to hear it was just the starter. First one I've heard of getting stuck with the plunger out and locking up the flywheel.

It is called running a scam. If you would have said yes they wouldn't have given the OP $1500 back when they found out it was just the starter. They would have perpetrated the lie. I have seen dealers say some ridiculous things. Drop a truck off for an oil change and they come back and tell you that the seal between the transmission and TC is bad and they need $2300 to fix it, because the trans fluid is being pumped into the diff??? Tell them not to touch it, drive it off the lot and pull the plugs and both trans and TC are fine.

Is it just me or do dealers always seem to paint the worst picture without checking things out?

I'm also in Fresno, and see you around town from time to time, your truck looks good! Good to hear you got the issue resolved.

I'm not sure which dealership you go to, but the Clovis dealership has been good to me.

I should have gone to Clovis in hindsight. Absent this forum, they may have talked me into a complete engine overhaul. That or I would have towed it to the Fresno Rescue Mission for a donation/tax write off:crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:
Hope to keep it on the road now for another 240k miles.

The exciting finale....here is the cost breakdown and what the tech wrote on the invoice- thanks for the input from this forum.

Anyone ever had this happen? I was getting a weird sound after the starting the 100 like the OP. The starter would not come off the engine mount after unbolting it. I gave it a couple of love taps and this is now the mess I have.

Anyone seen this before? Any thoughts on how to get the starter casting out of the block?

I tried using a pilot bearing puller and slide hammer tonight, but I can't get a great angle on it since the slide hammer is longer than the "V" cavity.

I'd like to find a puller that's jack screw style. I'll check HF tomorrow.

Bent the extractor. Starter galvanized itself to the block but I got that mother f@&$er.
