Holy crap.

I was seriously considering moving up to an LX this summer, kinda bored with my ES. Until I read this thread.

No F-ing way now, no thank you.

Two very different vehicles an LX and your ES. So many other things to consider. "I was thinking of stepping up and buying a two story house with 4 bedrooms overlooking a valley instead of my current single story with 2 bedrooms in a nice neighborhood that I am bored with. Then I found out how much more it will cost to heat. No way. Not ever."

I get about 12mpg around town driving back and forth to work everyday with my only "mod" being 275/70-18 E-rated Silent Armors.

Well duh... Of course they're very different vehicles.

11 mpg is atrocious, I can't justify that in any way. It's not about if I can afford it or not (I can). I had to get rid of my FJ62 for the same reason, and that was back when gas was below $2/gal.

Love everything about the LX, except that. Can't get past it. Wish i could.

It's taken 4691 posts to figure this out??

I think you wandered into the wrong Forum/Website

You need a 4WD Prius site...

Let me Google that for ya...

Just needs a Lift kit and some Mudders Baybee!

Here's what you need!

I just installed this today and gassed up.

This is the Ultra Gauge and it will make you a better driver. It's hard to imagine Hyper miling with a LC/LX but changing driving behavior and technique makes a big difference. I installed this to also get a hold of the numbers before and after Headers, NOCAT midpipes and CatBack Exhaust system.

This thing is cheap(inexpensive), does 7 screens with up to 8 Gauges per screen. Highly programmable. It's easy to read and bright. Displays OBDII info and clears Engine Codes.

Here it is after a Fillup and careful driving around town with about 8 miles of interstate. Getting this number takes some work. But it was continuously increasing.

So 36 miles, used approx 2.1 gallons. My avg MPG is 15.6.

If I cruise along at 55mph I could get close to 21mpg. I desperately need Jimmy Carter to fix those pesky 70 MPH speed limit signs! Jimmy Carter, where are you when we need you brother! Oh yeah, I forgot, he's still convinced he can make a good neighbor out of IRAN. He was last seen in Tehran talking about how Lazy we Americans are. Come back Jimmy! Fix our speed limit signs again! I don't think he knows what they're pullin' in Texas with those 85 MPH Speed Limit Signs. If only we could re-elect him! I saw that my LC can get about 23 MPG at 45 MPH on cruise control. Let's tell Jimmy! 45 JC, that's the new number!

Now onto the PIX!

You'll get better than 11! Even with 35's and other goodies I'm seeing 14.4 avg in 50/50 mixed. A stocker LX on the highway should be close to 20.

Granted, even 20 isn't 'stellar' by today's standards. But we're actually planning to ditch the ES350 to get a 2nd 100 series. For maybe an extra $75/month I can have my wife in something that (a) can haul kids/friends/gear, (b) is absolutely going to get her to the destination every time (not that the ES wouldn't), and (c) IMO is 100% survivable in any crash scenario except for a train. Can't put a price on (c). I'll ditch cable first.

I drove 60-65mph most of the way home in my bone stock 100 with nothing in it when i bought it. At MAX, i got 17mpg. This was pure hwy driving. i highly doubt anyone is getting 20mpg.

A stock LC could get 18mpg if the cruise control was set to 55mph. However, who drives 55 on the hwy these days?

Maybe not 20.0, but 19+ is doable on bone stock 03+ on the highway. I've seen it. Granted this is OR and it was with no A/C, windows up.

I wonder what your es mileage would be towing a loaded down snowmobile trailer?

I doubt there is a whole lot of LC owners who are driving them because they merely got tired of driving a sedan. Most of us bought them because despite their mileage shortfall, because we needed something/s they were capable at. Those things basically all share poor mileage as a trait with all the other options.

Example: Needs: 4wd and seats 7-8 - Would you rather drive a 4 wheel drive van getting 15 mpg or an LC getting 13mpg?
Need to tow a 5k lbs trailer - suburban getting 13mpg, or LC...etc you see the point...

Many LC owners seem to mitigate their mileage by having one decent mpg car in the daily driver stable. My wife drives a sporty Acura tl, which we zip all over in when the LC is not necessary. But I'll take the LC and the s***ty mileage when I wanna take 6 bros and a case of brews up to go snowboarding.

I don't come over here often, as you can tell. No witty responses.

I think you guys are mis-interpreting my intent. I'm well aware that an LX/UZJ is a very different animal. I stupidly took apart my truck 3 summers ago, and I'm still working on it as time allows, so I'm really missing having a real truck in the stable. I probably won't pull the trigger, I need to just suck it up and get my treasured mini-truck back on the road. I can justify keeping it because it's cheap to insure, works and wheels hard and keeps going, and decent on gas (~22 mpg even on 33's).

I was mostly just reacting to some of the numbers I see here in this thread. The OP posted about 11 mpg, and others chimed in that it wasn't that unusual. I can't live with that. Even 14 mpg is not acceptable FOR ME. I'd feel guilty every mile. But, I'm not hauling around kids anymore.

I'd love to be back in a Cruiser some day, but it's not likely. All of my vehicles have to earn their keep, no garage queens allowed, I don't have the room. Maybe a GX is a better choice for me. I've owned several 4Runners, but I really dislike the lift gates they put on them since '96. Not sure if I can tolerate the barn door though...

There's no way I'd every buy a Prius. Gaaaad I hate the look of those things.

God help me. I am a progressive liberal. I regularly commute to work on my bike. I use the light rail to get about town during the day. I make every effort to carpool with my wife on those days when the weather is lousy. I am an environmental advocate and vegan. And yet, I purchased a 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser three weeks ago. And I love it. After twenty years of lusting from afar, it's mine.

I average 15-16 mpg driving 60-65 mph on a bone-stock set-up. Fuel efficiency is relative. Drive thoughtfully (and conscientiously) and the rest will take care of itself.

That's it!

I've just send your name, home address, work address, and mistress's phone number to Al Gore, Code Pink, Occupy Wall Street, and the EPA. As well as the Joe Biden 2016 committee.

Now let the games begin...

Well played, sir. All worthy people/causes/agencies, indeed - especially the mistress! :D
