I have a 1988 FJ62 (CA version) and during a tune up I did with a friend I am not sure if my distributor cap got put back on correctly. It started right after the tune up, but then the ECM got fried as "we" tried to clear the trouble codes from the coolant sensors. It should have still been throwing a code for the O2 sensors that need to be replaced. Got a new ECM in (right year, not CA version), truck started right up then proceeded to run super rich until it fouled out all the plugs and ran no more. I cleaned up the plugs threw a CA ECM in and now it wont start. Has fuel, has Check engine light, no start.

Wondering if in the 4+ times the cap has been off since this fiasco started it got twisted and is out alignment, the plug wires all go to the right place, just wanted to check the orientation was correct.

thanks ----frustrated and missing driving my FJ62.

Thanks.

The cap can only go on one way. Toyota was looking after you. The little retaining bolts that clamp the cap down are not symmetrically arranged on the outer edge. If all the cap bolts got tightened down, the cap is aligned correctly.

Sweet. I thought so, but I also have one of the two nipples with no vacuum hose to it. My buddy assured me that there had not been a hose on it prior to the swap and I cannot find a loose hose in the spaghetti of hoses on that side of the engine.

There should be two vac lines off the dissy cap. One goes to somewhere on the air cleaner to provide a light vacuum. The other goes to a small air cleaner which I think is on the firewall. This system cycles air through the dissy to prevent corrosion.

Also prevents explosion - the fumes from the crankcase can build up inside the spark-filled dist. cap and create a minor 'poof' - I had this happen once. So, the vacuum lines to/from the dist. cap do serve a useful purpose, when you get all your other problems solved.

Be sure you don't have carbon trails in the cap, or any other issues with your cap and rotor while you're diagnosing your no-start condition.

thanks so much.
No juice to distributor or coil. I will pin out the ECU tomorrow to try to figure out where the problem is.

Never realized where those two hoses were supposed to go until i read this thread! what would that "poof" had felt like because Im not sure if not having the hoses on has affected anything but they're back on now.
