That’s an awesome setup, I see the appeal of being able to stand up inside. I went with a GFC roof top tent and it is amazing. I have had several RTT and while they are not what you’re asking about I can’t see how they don’t offer you an 80% solution for a fraction of the cost?

I think in a 100 series you are still living “around” the vehicle verses “inside” the vehicle.

I think at that point I’d like a full camper build out in the back. Maybe I’m missing your intentions of the appeal of this design?
These look awesome and seem to keep things lightweight but the space inside a 100 seems so limited already I’m not sure I see how the juice is worth the squeeze? YMMV.

RTT are fine when the weather is tolerable or on the occasional weekend excursion. When it's raining, snowing, and or windy with a little of all of the above, being able to jump in the front seat and go is what can make this lifestyle manageable. I've been doing this on/off for over 12 years so I've been there done that... Sprinter van, crew cab p/u, wagons, etc. This 100 series has been the best of all worlds and I don't have to tote around a camper, can climb and park nearly anywhere.

I know there are a few others that are/were interested in the campteq set-up. The above estimate/quote was for every option available including installation at their facility in CO. Installation alone is $4k, which I get since there is a lot of labor involved. Another costly option is the powder coating, which I could see foregoing since it is of aluminum construction. Worst case, a diy paint job would suffice. In reality, a base set-up and a diy install could get someone in this set-up for 12-13k. Which makes it far more reasonable and closer in value when considering a lot of other options, and what others spend on a decent rack and rtt.

I was interested for the longest time but the mattress (~44") is a bit narrow for two people (IMO). Narrower than the narrowest RTT. A twin mattress is 38" and so 6" wider than that.

I'd love to do what this guy did to his 4Runner, which was cut a hole in his roof and modify a rooftop tent to attach to the roof.

I like the idea of getting a wider tent and mounting it to a Dissent rack which was mentioned earlier in this thread.

I've been considering this approach. Like @hoser mentioned, sealing the opening would be the biggest task. A few really nice pre-owned Alu-cab
RTT's have been listed which would make a great foundation for this idea. My only hangup would be creating the access hole in the tent floor while not interfering with the sleeping sqftg and allowing the port to remain open to benefit from the diesel heater built into the cab area.

So, I have been dwelling on the idea of converting a hardshell RTT into a semi-perm sealed fixture with a hatch accessed thru the roof.

My idea is to design and construct an aluminum platform/framing structure that would be bolted to the roof and seal with sikaflex.

Finally watched his vids. Brilliant! I actually like his finish/detail work better then the above product.
The only drawback is the length but since I'm a solo dweller I could make this approach work with an included bed frame while still allowing an open air design. I have an idea for a better framing structure to fix to the roof but since I have moved from a shop that has every piece of fab equipment imaginable to one that has none, I'll need to find someone to cut and weld the aluminum for the concept I have.

My old a** Macbook doesn't support any cad/revit software so I'll need to see if my coworker can knock out the design layout so I can ship of to a send/cut/send.
