actually it has been moving along at a good pace, metalwork is almost done, I should have it off the rottiesserie here fairly soon and back on the frame, then I need to deal with the body panels and hang them, we may be moving here this summer, so I need to at least make it mobile.

Sweet, just waiting to get a re-build kit from Attlas. Gonna decide wether or not to get a new core when I pull it. U remember how much you paid for the new core? Might surf O side mananna if you're interested.

If there is a number of SC members that need one, it might be worth giving this guy a contact for a group buy.

Yeah, I would be in for 1. Looks like a super nice product...at $40 it would all depend on the shipping rate. Autozone is $69.99 but free shipping and lifetime warranty. Considering the shipping on the other it might be worth the extra $10 to be able to get a new one for any reason in a day or two thru AZ?

BTW anyone know what the foam wrap that goes around the cores and inside the box are made of? That's pretty much all I need...not a whole re-build kit. Foam looks pretty simple like something I could find locally.

brett told me that he has tried to find the same foam as the stuff that atlas uses in his kits, said he can't find it anywhere, and brett knows all things landcruiser, I just bought a few of the kits, shane is a cool guy, he will prob work a deal with you if you pm him and let him know you need a kit.

I would be interested in a core for the 55, but not sure if they are the same?

I did a search for your rigs heater, the internet tells me it's the same, but figure it out for sure. I just emailed proliance to see if the will help out the club with a group order. I'll only charge 59.00, so you can save 10 bucks.

Well not really, I don't have my resellers license any more, so, if they will go for it, it will be cost.

Sweet! Bigger problem is that my head gasket is toast. Had crazy heat spikes the last couple days, radiator boiled and spewed fluid I put in when trying to burp. I have a new Thermostat. Took it to a radiator shop and they confirmed the head gasket is done. Fxxx! I've kind of been denying that this might happen soon....I've seen a few signs. Guess I'm gonna see what SDTrux would charge to fix?

Dude, that sucks. What signs was it giving you that led you to believe it was heading south on you?

A little bit of white smoke, coolant around the head where the gasket is(been like this for a couple months) and weird high heat fluctuations. Heat spiking got really bad the last couple days so much that I didn't really want to drive the truck more than a couple miles to surf and back. I was getting up to 210+ and the engine hardly ever gets that hot. Tried to add some fluid yesterday and it took a bunch. Ran it to burp, fluid started coming back out of the filler, it hit 190 pretty quick and boiled over...big mess. Radiator shop ran a block test on it and confirmed. I replaced my thermostat a couple months ago with an aftermarket and was hoping that it had gone bad. I will double check this just to be sure. NS what to do? Engine swap, just a head gasket job or whole top end re-build? ProTrux gave me a ball park quote of 1500-2k! They said that is very rough without being able to look at the vehicle and it's age.

Yeah, would really like to avoid a swap if possible....lot of time and money for something that is going to be old and used as well. Even going to a 2f or best case senario a new crate v8 is going to be out of my budget range considering all the other things that would need to be done to get it to work....but then again 2k is a lot of money to spend on an old engine. Gonna give it a couple days to weigh all my options and try to figure out what to do.

is this your only car? do you need to rely on it? and do you have a place to work on it? If you don't rely on it and you have somewhere to work on it, I would do some engine exploration. It may be the case that the top end only needs rebuilding and a fresh head gasket put on. This is not that hard of a thing to do. I did this to my 73 during a weekend when back in college. If however, the engine block is shot, then that is a whole other story. The point is that you should be able to figure out what it is by taking the head off and looking around. Then, if the head needs to be redone and the lower block is fine, you can just send the top end to a machine shop, put it together and be done with it. How many miles does it have on it? the bottom end of these engines are fairly stout and they don't go bad that often.

Thanks Noah. Luckily I have a dd and a 2 car garage! This is the truck Brett fixed the carb on at Doms, 73 FJ40 with original F and 102k miles. Definitely hoping it is only the top end. I'm totally for fixing stuff myself, especially after that carb episode, but I am serious lacking in knowledge and experience to do the job properly without someone there to guide me through it. I'm not sure I wouldn't screw something else up accidently while doing the job.

dive in my friend, if you get stuck I am sure I can come over to help. The process is outlined I think in the factory service manual. Really it is just a matter of labeling everything when you take it off and putting it back together correctly, that's it. You will need to adjust the valves when you reassemble. In the end, stuff like this is fun and is how you end up learning.
