The club is planning the usual run to Calico on January 24 and anyone is welcome to join us. This run can either be a scenic day trip or overnight trip depending on your time frame (and the weather!). The club run will be on the milder trails around Calico Ghost Town (not on Doran or Odessa). This run will be suitable for stock vehicles but keep in mind a couple of spots are challenging and may either be passable with spotting or through a bypass (I don't guarantee you will not get any scratches!). The plan for the day trip is to meet on Saturday (Jan. 24) at the intersection of Calico Road and Mule Canyon Road (click here for map) at 9:00 A.M. and head out on the trail by 9:30.

Attached is a Google Earth file with the approximate route of the trail we ran last year (trails marked in red and yellow). I am planning to follow the same route again this year since the trail has a few challenges and we can usually make reasonable time with a large group. Let me know if you have any other trail ideas to consider. Note that if the group gets too large way may split up and have one group leave earlier.

If you have any questions, post up or message me. Message me if you want my phone number. For our Ham operators, let's use channel 146.535.

If you are planning on attending (or camping) please post here or message me so we do not leave anyone behind.

Thanks!

Do you remember roughly how long the trail took last year? I need to be in Pioneertown later that day so I'm planning accordingly.

We were at the pavement by about 4:00 P.M. Keep in mind that anything can happen and the day could stretch on longer. However, last year a few had to leave early so they broke off from the group and took a shorter way out. So, there is the option to head out early…. Just have a good mapping program to find your way out if needed…

OK perfect. Sounds great see you guys out there. I'll be bringing out the little 2 door diesel for this one.

I’m toying with attending in my FJ45.

I might have a music gig that day. But if that doesn’t materialize, I will probably head up Friday, with plans to stay through to Sunday.

Mark,

It would be nice to see you on a trail run! @TemboTusk wants to camp Friday and Saturday night and I plan to join him if the weather is good. I am getting softer with age and camping in wind or very cold weather is not as fun as it used to be...

IIRC, where we camped Friday night a couple of years ago was a trash dump.
I think you camped in Mule Canyon, which gets heavy use and can be a mess. I think camping somewhere along the trail between the Wall Street Canyon overlook trail and Fort Irwin Road would be much less crowded and cleaner. Maybe in this general area: Google Map?

Sounds correct. Easy to find though for early Friday evening arrivals.
