Cable adapter on Speed Sensor , 80 series. (1 Viewer)

Can someone help me and explain what is its purpose? It is an adapter threaded onto Speed cable (I think) to the transfer case . Engine and transmission has been swapped, not sure if this is needed? Yo be connected?
L.C now has a 5.3 with the 4l60e transmission
