This is your official invite........................

April 27th, we will meet at the city park at the Williamsburg Exit right off of I-25 exit 75 at 9:00am. I have left my tow vehicle and trailer there twice before with no issues.

The trail starts about 12 miles south of there and if all goes well we will cross the Rio Grande about a 1/2 mile south of there at the end of the day. This is a fairly moderate trail that will take about 8 hours to run and body damage is possible.

With some great views of the valley below

Some of us will be camping at Elephant Butte Lake and rolling from there. There are also campgrounds at Caballo lake and along the river closer to the start of the trail.

The trail runs up a dry river bed from about 3500 feet up to the top of Timber Mountain at 7600 feet then back down the mountain and ending with a river crossing just south of Williamsburg, NM.

We hope to join you guys Friday night camping.

We took 2 stock TJ's and a stock Tacoma over it last time. One of the TJ's had the factory limited slip and only ended up with a little rocker panel scuffing, the other TJ had to be winch off of one rock but a lift would have fixed that. The Tacoma needed to be winched over several locations and ended up with wheel, rocker and bumper damage. I would recommend a small lift and 31" tire minimum, a taller tire for a longer wheelbase, locker is not needed.

I have not seen bighorn sheep on the trail but it is prime country for them.

we would like to make it. maiden off highway miles for the FZ-LL80 :steer::clap:

Only it's not a V8, it's a Chebby straight six.

Let see if we can get this back on track...............................

Currently 3 Land Cruisers, 3 Jeeps and a Fullsize Bronco. I believe all 7 are planning on camping plus a few more of our friends that are just along for the camping

Think it's taken by 200 hundy's.... :D

And "good luck getting your rig off the trail because none of us have GM engine spares"

:flipoff2:

c'mon no love for the shell of an 80? i DO carry a universal towstrap.

John, he's just jealous.

Could you show me a link or tell me the thought behind going with the inline 6 vs running an V8 LS motor?
Fit?
MPG?

"yes" i guess... the GM atlas 4.2(LL8) out of mid 2k trailblazers and Envoys... i lost 250# off the nose, got more torque (and 90% of it from 1k to 6k rpm) and more HP. the I6 back in a I6 engine compartment was desirable as opposed to the v8... i think the 5.3 vortec v8 would be nice too, in the end i guess i chose the i6 since lots of guys have done the 5.3 and i was curious if implementation of the i6 was as good as paper. there are some significant hurdles to shove that particular motor in an 80, mostly since it was only offered in an IFS TB and envoy.

the swap itself has been an adventure (and i was only an invested spectator) and while i really like a lot of things about it, nothing is without compromise. i'm happy to yap about it, but if Terrill hasn't figured out there is no such thing as "on topic" around here and i will refrain from derailing yet another thread.

the 80s section has a 4.2 atlas thread you can read about if you want some popcorn material. i have not put in my two bits...

You can derail it all you want. I think the atlas 6 cylinder is a great motor and it keeps it from being like every other engine swap. That is why I went with the Mercedes diesel, when I started that project there were only a handfull of them, now everybody wants in on it. The atlas 5 cylinder was one of the motors I considered when looking for an engine swap candidate.

Cool swap. What transmission and tcase did you use or did you stick with the Toyota stuff? Looks like Advance Adapters has a possible solution.
