^ per Mike at DT earlier today: "They've applied for the cert...". Given the fact DT states on their current websit all their headers are legal in all 50-states...I can only believe his comment about the cert app must be bogus too.

Then he told me to go to a specific smog shop in Salinas...2nd one today...and that was a no go too.

Sorry to sound so aggressive on this issue...but they're liars.

I think your reaction is well deserved. I guess I'm confused on what Mike's answer is when you ask "But your website clearly states Smog Legal in all 50 States"

Where is the disconnect?

There are a lot of folks watching this thread. I'm sure our hard earned dollars make up a very small percentage of DT sales as a whole, and maybe they just don't give a hoot. My money is on hold.

My guess is that the cert is not that complicated but maybe a little pricey. Couple that with a lack of doner for certification and it being a small portion of their business and it just got dropped even with the best intentions. The right thing would be for them to follow through with a cert now, however... if they're directing you to a shady inspection station it doesn't sound like that's in the cards.

I am sorry to hear about your experience SPRESSMON. At this point, my only recourse is to swap out the header for manifolds that I bought from another member. Once that is done, I can smog the vehicle.

When researching this issue about two weeks ago, I spoke with a manager in the aftermarket certification department at CARB and he told me that he was not able to find paperwork from DT for LC headers. This doesn't mean that an application was not filed, it just means he could not find a status update in the database he was looking into at the time.

While I have really enjoyed the headers, they have not been worth the added trouble and expense.

I hope that this helps.

Good to hear from you.

Actually, quite easy to get everything installed the first time around. I looked around for the kid that everyone looked up to that was into the local 'racing' scene. When I found him, I offered him $250 to guide me through the process. We did everything in my garage in about 4.5 hours.

The hardest part was loosening rusted bolts on the manifold. Since we put new bolts in, I am expecting that it will be easier to loosen the bolts this time around.

A friend and I are going to be giving it a stab in the next week or two.

The process was a follows:

1. Jack the front of the car up.
2. Remove tires
3. Secure vehicle on jack stands
4. Remove plastic mad guards that goes inside fender wells
5. Unbolt motor mounts
6. Unbolt headers
7. VERY carefully jack up motor till header clears steering linkage
8. Remove headers
9. Remove oxygen sensors
10. Reverse process with exhaust gaskets

I may be forgetting some steps but I do remember the process being very straight forward. I also remember about 75 to 90 minutes of the 4.5 hours trying to loosen rusted out exhaust bolts.

I will report back how the process goes when I get around to it in the next week or two.

I hope that this helps.

Has anyone had any progress with this issue?

I haven't had the time to be very active on the forums or mess around with the cruiser lately, but I just got that "you've been selected for STAR testing" notice in the mail. After reading this thread and learning that we've been effectively duped by DT, I am considering taking legal action.

I'll just echo everyone else's frustration about essentially wasting money and spending an exorbitant amount of money just to make my LC "pre-DT." I've got the full header and catback system, so I'm guessing I'll need to find stock replacements for both.

DT's website still states that ALL of their headers are legal in ALL 50 states.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do if I can't get this thing smogged by the deadline in March. My vehicle is my livelihood and I'll have to register it for non-operation.

AFAIK DT just keeps making good on false promises. Some might call them liars.

That is exactly as advertised as per the Doug Thorley website. I have no idea how far along they've gotten with their CARB approval though as I don't have their headers so it's of no concern to me (plus I'm not in CA).

Just bringing a thread back from the dead as its been nearly 2-years since Doug Thorley, here on MUD, informed us they indeed had applied for CARB certification for their 2UZ-FE headers. Never mind September 2013 was nearly two years after Doug Thorley informed us these headers were actually legal in all 50-States. Can't imagine it takes 4-years to get headers CARB certified...even in California!

This screen shot taken this morning from the Doug Thorley website:

Yeah...I just can't let a dead dog lie. Lie.

I'd be pissed off too.. I so want a set of these headers, but the hassle of smogging it in a "special" way isn't worth it

First year my DT headers did not pass smog in California on my Samurai. I have an EO stamped on the headers and they are listed on the CARB website for my vehicle and year. However, there is now a caviot where it states that there may be some modification required. The smog tech said that the O2 sensor is at the junction of the 1 and 3 cylinder and is therefor not legal since it doesn't get a reading of the accumulative output of all 4 cylinders. I'm sure that this latest addendum to my EO number on my 15 year old headers is probably what DT is facing right now with all of their once CARB legal headers. I'm going to have to drill a new hole by the collector and weld a new bung for an O2 sensor.

Another reason to love Texas.

haters gonna hate. Just trying to shed some light on they "why" aspect of the headers not passing smog inspection. Don't want help from someone who drives a different rig i'll take my leave of you.

Sorry to revive an old thread but does anybody know about the status of the DT headers with regards to CARB compliance?

On CariD the headers are shown as CARB compliant (Doug Thorley Headers® - 304 SS Short Tube Exhaust Headers)

On the DT website, it still shows CARB E.O. pending. I've sent an email to DT and will report back.

Can you really trust anything CARiD puts up? I mean they did steal the image of the header close up from my blog, TLCFAQ. AN invoice to them for it's use will be forth coming. :) Copyright is a bitch. But I digress... The header has no EO application for the Land Cruiser - just the Tundra IfIR.

I talked to DT recently and they are not currently seeking EO in california for these headers. CarId is wrong here

Exactly and this is why we are pissed at DT - they were sold to owners with the promise and expectation of EO cert for California.
