I’m looking at purchasing this 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser. I’ve read on the LC forums and other places to check the KDSS valves for rust. Does this look bad, or do I need to remove the entire cover to assess the condition of the KDSS valves?

We currently have a Tundra and a 5th gen 4Runner (non-KDSS), and I’m used to cleaning up minor surface rust and going over it with black paint. Not entirely sure what I need to look for on the KDSS valves.

I also looked for the 5.7 cam tower leak and I don’t see any signs of weeping. I still need to check the radiator for leaks. Are there any other issues I need to look for?

I think that generally looks acceptable, but it could have been better for sure. You definitely don't want it to get any rustier than that. As mentioned in other threads, slap some marine grease, LPS3, or fluid film all over that to keep it from rusting further.

Next time you go look at it, take a 5mm hex socket, a 6" extension, a ratchet handle, and a can of your favorite rust penetrant (Kroil is my fav). Spray those hex plugs, give it a few minutes, then put your wrench on each one and see if they will open. Just crack them open, no more than that, then tighten again.

Update, I ended up going back and checking the two 5mm screws. Both backed out with little force, and I snugged them back up. So if we end up buying, do I spray the whole KDSS deal with LPS3/similar or just the bolts?

It won't hurt to spray the whole thing. Why stop there? Spray the entire undercarraige!

Spray as much of the KDSS valve body as you can. Here's some pictures from when I sprayed mine with LPS3:

It all depends on where the LC has spent most of its time. My 2018 LC with 52,000 miles has zero rust anywhere, it has been in TX the entire time. If you're looking for something from CA, then you'll probably have no rust problems. This is the general consensus I've seen brought up in other threads, too. The KDSS valve enclosure started to get some thin surface rust, but that is a well known problem with the LC200, and you can prevent further corrosion by covering the KDSS valve with a LPS3 or something similar.

Here's after I coated the KDSS valves with LPS3:

Thank you both for the advice and help! We’ll see tomorrow if we can agree on a price. If so I’ll be buying some LPS3 and going to town

That is zero rust for Missouri. Don't worry about it.

Since the hex screws popped loose easily you’ll be fine. As others have said, just clean and grease it up. And being in Missouri, keep an eye on it (I’m here as well). MODOT (Missouri Dept of Transportation LOVES to salt the highways in winter:bang: Side note, love seeing several new owners popping up in the MO. We need to plan a meet up👍

That's great and well done. I wire-brushed and Dremel'ed away the rust. I lathered up the screws with anti-seize and worked it back in the threads...careful not to unscrew them more than 3 whole turns. Then, I slapped some marine grease all over it. Pics are in post #9757 in this thread:

Just wanted to post an update, we did end up buying the 2016 Land Cruiser with 25,500 miles on the odo. I have ordered some LPS3 and will coat the KDSS and clean up the undercarriage. We’re hoping it will serve us well for years to come.

This will be my Fiancée’s (Wife in October) daily, so nothing to crazy mod-wise. She only drives ~5,500 miles a year so it should be low mileage as it ages. But we’re looking forward to modifying this new to us 200 series.

Thanks again for everyone’s advice, opinions, and wealth of knowledge on this forum. I’m pretty active on the Tundra forums, I hope to build up my Land Cruiser knowledge quickly.

It looks great! Congrats on finding such a low mileage 2016!
