I'm bidding on this what kind of problems can I expect?

One would think this should have it own thread in tech??

Sometimes people use them for road miles only, traveling alot on the highways, usually whenthis happens the rest of the rig is spotless. Maybe its like this. Id think 6max. These are great motors but the question is what would it cost to replace engine and trans, think about that.

With anythingthe mileage is an indication of the life of the rig, more miles less life or really maint costs.

You're asking for opinions about buying a truck, just like the thread title.

Correct but the threads title was rephrased to reflex tech. Then it was deleted and hidden by

I search and found no thread referring to that kind of mileage.

I found the carfax weak with info. I saw three repairs early in life but no details. I have emailed the seller to get more maintenance info.

Thinking it would be a safe vehicle for my daughter to get to school around the corner. I dont want to get into tons of repairs.

then get her a camery or an accord with 100K on it. they are everywhere and solid cars.

As with any used vehicle it's going to depend on how it was taken care of. Just from a quick glance I'd have the following questions:

- I see a timing belt sticker on the airbox, how long ago was that last done?
- I see brownish staining on the carpet both in the second row, under the passenger seat, and in the driver's footwell. What's that from and why is it throughout the front cabin?
- the seller has zero feedback and looks like a Toyota dealership. Why are they selling it on Ebay, couldn't sell it local? Also, the description they gave it, one sentence, shows they're not too interested in it.

That truck is at a Toyota Dealership (Magness Toyota) AND is on the showroom floor. I also think it is worth $6-$7k tops depending on service records and how clean it is but I bet that dealership thinks it is worth a lot more than that.....:p

On another note, my brother has a 99 model with 215k miles on it in Texarkana TX. He bought it used several years ago and his wife has been driving it. They just had a new baby so he upgraded to a 2004 with 150k. I told him to put it on craigslist and then I would link it here. I think it will be in the $8500 range. He is very particular about his vehicles but I am not sure of its condition. He is a very honest guy and would definitely be forthright in discussing it.

Any information or help would be appreciated

Hello!

I am currently a owner of a double cab Taco and have been looking in to trading it in on a LC. The best one so far as far as rust and maintenance is concerned has a whine from the transmission. I have read numerous posts and have found people say it is caused by cold weather and the fluid not warming up yet. It has been cold here in MD for the past few days. I never got to drive it long enough to see if the whine would disappear. So I guess my question is should I go back and take a look and drive it a bit longer, or not chance it and wait until another comes by?

Any advice would be great!

Hard to say if its trans or another part of the drive train, how do u know its trans? Make whine when stopped? Or driving or both?

Tacoma 02~
2000 was an awesome year for the landcruiser, if the vehicle is in good shape, then do not let the whine scare you off.

My 2000 makes a whining noise when the temperature is below about 5 F.
It goes away after 1 or 2 miles of driving.
It really does sound like turbo whine.

The pitch of the noise is related to the speed of the wheels (not the rpm speed of the engine).

It goes away after about 10 minutes of driving, as soon as everything warms up.
At first I thought it might be frozen water in a front wheel bearing.
But I am now told that it is the transfer case whine and this is normal on the 2000 LC when it is cold.

All of my fluids are fresh, the truck runs great, and I am told that the whine is normal for 2000 LCs when the weather is cold (like close to zero cold).

So I would not let the cold weather whine scare you off, but you definitely want to drive the truck for 30 minutes or so to make sure the noise goes away. Also check to make sure that everything works like it should. Listen for noises when turning in tight circles with the windows down. It's probably worth the 100 bucks to have it checked out by a mechanic, or even the Toyota dealer, before you pull the trigger.

We also have a Tacoma ('09) and a 100-series cruiser ('00). The Tacoma rides like a Toyota pick-up, whereas the Landcruiser rides like a V8 luxury vehicle.

Get the landcruiser. You will not regret it.

This weekend we took 5 people snowboarding to a backcountry area here in Alaska.
The temperature was 10-20 below zero F.
The cruiser ran perfect and everyone stayed comfortable and cozy.

Hey thanks for the info, it makes the whine when the gas pedal is pressed under acceleration. When the gas pedal is lifted the whine goes away. I can tell it is coming from the area of the stereo and center console. I'm assuming it could also be another part connected to the drive train, the parts that are between the motor and transmission.

Do you feel it would be safer then a 100?

i think a 100 is safer in a crash than an Accord or a Camery, but you have to look at the entire picture of it. It's a truck that has over 300,000 miles on it and will more than likely need repair.

even though a vehicle is safer in a crash it won't matter when it's stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.

what is your budget? $6000? a $6000 100 series doesn't sound like a truck you expect to be overly reliable. Sounds like a truck to take off road and wheel.

so my question would be. Why did they decide on selling it when the new baby hit? reliably concerns? Not that it isn't a stellar truck, but when it comes down to it a combination of any truck with 215,000 miles on it and the people you love don't necessarily mix.

do some research on here. 2000 year model land cruisers have transmission issues moreso than any other year. Personally i wouldn't buy a 2000 for that very reason and if i heard a whine in the transmission I would run from it.

read up, there is a lot of info about the transmission issues for the 100 series in 2000.

You have made some good points and now I'm rethinking my options.:hhmm:
Thanks
