Price is definitely high w/ 133k miles. It does look like it is in pretty nice condition for a '99 with that mileage. And I'd check the serpentine belt as well. For comparison sake, check the classifieds tab here in IH8MUD, there are a couple '99 LC100's for sale.

And just for full disclosure, do a search for 2-pinion front differential problems on the 98/99 models if you're planning on off-roading it in any meaningful way.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to work on the price to hopefully get it down another grand. Here is a better picture. I would really love to hear what you all think about the rust. Thanks.

Thanks for the reassurance. I am going to pass!

No worries...I would have to say that it got to be quite frustrating. I can't believe some of the prices people were asking and the rarity of finding one in good condition, etc. You WILL find one.

Buy rust free. No need for the headaches. The pic above may be "normal" for that area, but if I were buying a rig I were going to keep for a long time, I would buy a rust free rig from a different area.

Ok I finally feel that I have a good prospect lined up. Let me know what you think.

Joining the 100/lx470 club

Hi Guys,

I am going to check out 2 trucks next week, a 1999 lx470 and a 1998 100 series. Both have the same mileage at 175,000 kms, the 100 is a US export, no locker in the 470, locked 100 series. Locker doesn't matter to me as I have my HZJ79 tricked out, the 100/470 will be my family vehicle.

Black 100, charcoal 470. I like the looks of the 100 more than the 470, it will all boil down to which checks out better.

Any preferences?

Thanks!

Welcome over Louis! There are probably 30+ differences between the LX and LC in those years. Some advantages, some disadvantages, some meh. So depends on your tastes.

Off top of my head, here are some differences on the LX.
AHC suspension
Projector headlamps
Rear AC
Automatic Climate control (I do like... much better than the LX450)
Memory seats
Homelink
Softer leather seats
Body Cladding
Better looking instrument cluster in LX (IMO)
Different Key (possibly better based on broken key survey)
Real wood interior vs stick on
Remote Retractable side view mirrors/auto down
Auto retract steering wheel (suggest disable for longevity)
Auto down power windows (all, not just driver)
Heated mirrors

Driving a 1989 Mercedes 300 SE right now. She's solid as a rock. Way more solid than anything I've riden in or driven in the past few yrs, including my wife's Avalon. However, with two dogs, and two kids, it's time our house goes back to at least one SUV. I was considering 4Runners until I drove one. The drivers seat just wasn't very comfortable for me. So, long story made short, I've decided I want a LC or LX. Budget is prob around $15k-$18k. I've found a LX at a local used car dealer here. Gonna stop by and drive it tomorrow. Here's my question.

It's a 2001 LX 470 w/ 107k, $17.9k. Mostly new tires, and looking on Lexus owners site, was serviced at Lexus of Orlando it's entire life. However, I'm looking at the service records, and I it being in the shop a ton. It also looks like the timing belt was replaced twice. ??? Is this normal wear and tear? I'm used to the expense, in fact, I'd bet it'll be cheaper than my car riight now, especially since I could probably do a decent amount of work on it myself.

Okay, I am looking at a gold 2003 LC with a VERY low 46k miles on it. It is a one owner in VERY good shape (I have seen pics, and a tech has looked it over). It has every option, but rear entertainment. The Mercedes dealer has offered it to me for $25,400 (original asking price was $26,800).

Which "book" do you guys prefer when evaluating fair price? NADA on this vehicle is about $3k higher than Edmunds. I offered the dealer $24k and they refused saying they had already refused that offer from someone else.

Thoughts?

The Books are worthless. That is a good price for a low mileage 100, If you want to do a comparison go to New Cars, Used Cars - Find Cars at AutoTrader.com and compare nationally for similar vehicles.

At that mileage replacing the timing belt twice is the proper routine maintenance. If they followed all the regular service intervals in the Lexus owner's manual it would have alot of trips to the shop on the service history. I would take it as a plus that they did both timing belt replacements as that is an expensive service that many put off - and if the belt goes it gets very, very expensive as this is an interference motor. Can't judge without seeing the vehicle but this could be a pampered 100.

I just went and test drove that 2001 LX. It is amazingly clean, drives like new, and you could eat off the undercarriage. No dirt and absolutely no rust Everything works as it should. Has one chip in the front bumper about the size of a pencil eraser. Unfortunatley, I think this car is here about 30-45 days early for me. I've promised myself that if I make my companies top producers list, I will allow myself to get a new car. That doesn't end until June 30.

If any of you guys are around Columbia, SC, this is definately worth a look. He told me $18k including tax title and tags.

any change to thoughts....I have looked at

1. 2000, 134k miles, $14k, 2 owners, no smokers, timing belt replaced
2. 1999, 81k miles, $14k, 2 owners, no smokers, dealer maintained
3. 2000, 94k miles, $15k, 1 owner, no smoker, dealer maintained, timing belt replaced
4. 2000, 65k miles, $16k, 1 owner
5. 2002, 149k miles, $16k, 2 owners, water pump, timing belt, etc replaced 112kmiles

I went with a white/tan 99. Starter replaced, manifolds replaced, 90k service done, etc...I wanted the rear locker because I knew I was going to put in a front ARB. A fully locked truck is a definite for me...Love lockers...Good luck with the purchase.

Though I would like the bells and whistles...a 99 that I can save enough on to put an ARB up front to fix the 2pinion issue...with low mileage and no rust is a solid contender. Thanks for input.

2000 LC 142K - Buying Help?

I have an opportunity to by a 2000 LC with 142,500 mi from a family member who originally bought it new. He's never serviced it at a dealership, so the recommended maintenance items probably haven't all been done. He's pretty good about oil changes. I took it to a dealer today for a used car check and they found $3300 worth of odds and ends that need fixing (timing belt never changed, front brake pads, antenna broken, leaky CV axles in front, rack and pinion steering gear filling with fluid, left bank of exhaust manifold leaking, windshield cracked, air filter needs replacing). Dealer said other fluids look good and clean, 4WD looks good, tires are okay. He rated it Fair cosmetically and mechanically.

He'll probably trade it in if I don't buy it, so we can probably work out a good deal, but wondering what else I should be thinking about / expecting to go wrong on this rig if I buy it. It would be my weekend play toy - will pull a Polaris RZR S (about 2K lbs with trailer).

  • What's going to break next?
  • How much is too much to pay?
  • How much is fair?

drove a nice one today in Hilton Head SC...2002 with 150k but pretty much dealer maintained and has new timing belt and water pump...though they did not do the full 90k service as front bearings were not repacked but everything else was done it appears. Here is what it has that I found or my Lexus/Toyota mechanic friend found I will address:

1. Front bearings need packing
2. Passenger o2 sensor needs replacing...they did drivers side but passenger threw code so should be easy fix for them.
3. Wood trim over passenger window controls missing...looks like glue failed and it just fell off. Any way to get a replacement used or to just change out all the wood trim with something else?
4. passenger door woofer blown....are speakers replaceable or are they powered speakers like bose uses that I would be stuck with?

Other than that it is in great shape and well maintained...
