Looking to get into a LX or LC, been looking around locally a decent amount. Found a 99 with 137k miles for $8900, exterior and interior are great. Solid deal but it was underbody rust due to being an Ohio car. Looking for more opinions. Also not opposed to doing some rust proofing/preventing. These are the only pictures i have of the underside as of now.

^ what he said. The first and second picture shows that they sprayed the frame with something.

Two possible choices, curious as to what the wise forum folks here think of either deal, which one is better... I haven't looked at either in person yet...

1998 w/ 107k, asking price $13k - 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser Sport Utility 4D - and you can see in the pics a timing belt sticker.
2006 w/ 175k, asking price $20k (quick text and their "ePrice" is $18.5k) 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser - sales person on text didn't know if there was any TB/WP replacement history but would check.

For me, I really like the 5spd over 4spd, and the extra HP. But 70k more miles, and ~7k more $ (figuring some more negotiation in either price)?? And I don't like the AHC, I don't think. What do I know, I've never owned a LC yet at all :p

Also, I've read the threads about the difficulty in upgrading the stereo in nav equipped vehicles with integrated climate controls, but you can see there is an aftermarket single DIN in the '06, replacing the lower cassette section, and leaving the nav/climate unit in place. Pics seem to indicate it works... curious what people think of this as well...

Just from looking at it in those pics I wouldn't say it's alot of rust only minor I think sometimes people make it out bigger then it is the rust issues ok fair enough if it's a huge amount. When I was looking for my car found alot of cars with low miles no rust etc in poor condition or accidents etc.Where the opposite found cars with higher miles better condition and more looked after and some had minor rust.

Miles don't really tell the store with the 100 series. How well maintained is more reveling; inspect, inspect, inspect & inspect some more.

Most would say buy newest with lowest miles. Where there is a lot to be said for this line of thinking, condition is most important to me. Number one & two for me is no rust & no accidents (minor fender bender is not a big deal).

If buying the 98-99, the rear differential locker option gives value, at least to the off roads' beginner class. I'd not give anywhere near 13K for a 98 even with factory rear locker, which I didn't see on this one, but that's me.

The 06-07 have the VVTi which makes Timing belt a must to change at factory recommended intervals of each 90K miles or 7 years. The buyer's paying $20 to $30k on 06-07 are very sensitive to mileage. Beware of the air pump issue & now we're see CATs fail for unknown reason here in mud.

I personally like the changes made for 00-02. Each group of years (98-99, 00-02, 03-05 & 06-07) has it's own set of positives & negatives. Do your homework!

When I was looking all I knew was ...
1- I wanted an LX
2- preferred a 2001-2003 because these had Transmission dip sticks rather than sealed trannys.
3- Color black/tan then white/tan
4- nixed the 2000 because of Transmission issues
5- preferred Nav because I did not know better.
6- wanted 100K to 120K miles
7- didn't figure 4-speed vs 5-speed Transmission was a major issue

... what I ended up with was a 2002 LX470, black/tan, new set of Michelins, all fluids changed 1K previously,
like brand new condition, and only 24,970 miles. I never thought I would find an LX with less than 100K.

I'm retired and its going to be my main driver and I plan to tow a Travel Trailer a couple times a year.

So, what are the changes you like about the 00-02 model year.

To start with, my old school thinking, never buy first two years of any production. Issues corrections are generally in third year.

Secondly, rear differential locker was not high on my list on needs, and weak front 2 bolt pinion was change to 4 bolt in 00. 98-99 had more issue with throttle body that we don't see much of in other years.

00 changes corrected most those issue seen earlier, then further changes for 01-02 creature comforts & trim are nice to me.

I'm not sure what transmission issue you're referring too, but IIRC 98-00 had transfer case vibration issues, corrected in 01.

I'm a DIYer so transmission dip stick is nice for me as well. 5 speed trany may be nice, but all I noticed was more shifting with it.

The no NAV is preferred by me. Long term NAV can be a pricy maintenance option. Besides our phones have GPS, so I've no need of the NAV, which is difficult for me to even see the screen.
I could list a number changes some good and some not so good that we see 03+. I'll not open that :worms:here today. But 01-02 are my favorite years for lowest cost of ownership long term IMHO.

Not new to Landcruisers but new to the 100 series what are your guys opinion on this it is about 2.5 hrs from me so will be a little bit of a hike to check it out. Seller says that it is due timing belt and that all other services have been performed by Lexus CD Player doesnt work and no rust looks fairly clean in the pics and he has been responsive to my questions. Price has dropped 900 dollars in 3 days we are in no rush but are looking to get a 100 in the next couple of months.

2000 LX470 with 126kms - replaced AHC. Pretty rotten body though.

Don't buy rust. The rear hatch is very bad sign, so clean the undercarriage to have good look.

Did you check at myLexus with VIN for history & carfax. If truly well maintained, I'd not be concerned with miles. But I can use a wrench and have a few!

Yup ran it through my lexus updated there through 212000 miles which matches up with our conversations talked him down quite a bit and am going to bite the bullet on it going to pick it up tomorrow. Will start a thread once we get it back to the house guess I am a member of the 100 club now. We will have owned a 40,60,80, and now a 100.
