Builds Buster Brown-Slow maintenance, slow owner, slowing my roll way down. (1 Viewer)

I did plug the L pipe at the base of the carb. I still like the idea of using the cc, reducing smog is an added benefit, for less vapors to my nose.

So the gas tank, the way I have hooked it up, is venting to atmosphere through the cc.

Truck is two hours away on the weekends currently.

Again, thank you guys and gals for the info. It is well received.

Comet.

So in this diagram, where does the mine tie into the air cleaner (bottom left line)? Is it for vacuum or vent to air (hooked up to the air cleaner).

@mwebfj60 I shamelessly used your diagrams and drew them so I could remember them at midnight in the middle of nowhere without electricity. Thank you for the guidance.

Ongoing baselining includes birf inspection and repacking of the drivers side. New rotors, calipers, and pads after the wheel studs are pressed in. I tried the lug nut method but couldn't get the studs in all the way. Took them to a shop with a press.

All buttoned up and waiting on the rotor. Brake line was in good shape but in my rush to tear everything apart, I cut it and thought I could just put a new soft line in. WRONG! Everything is seized up and the nuts came pre-rounded. Time to utilize specialty parts for the hard line.

Ian, thank you very much. The passenger side was hooked up exactly like you have it in the picture. My confusion is where to hook everything on the drivers side. I purchased a non-usa carb from City Racer LLC and I only have one vacuum port. Apparently I can throw everything out the window in relation to the vacuum routing when I do that.

The counter top is getting more room. Front axle service, kept the bearings and races. New rotors, pads, soft and hard brake lines. The mity-vac is not set up to do as much pumping as was required to fit both front rotors. The pin in the handle kept popping out and shooting across the floor. Thank goodness I was trying to keep the area relatively clean or it would have blended into the mess.

Flipped buster around and started into the rear brakes. Talk about a rats nest, there was more mud in the rotors than brake lining. The screw that is supposed to be on the rotor was not present on either drum. Passenger side drum came off relatively easy, drivers side is still attached. I sheared four of the six studs on the passenger side rear. This occurrence made me decide to replace all the wheel studs. Fronts are done so now I have to read up on the rear axle service to remove the axles.....:bounce: More to come next week.

I show it here!

Vent below the master cylinder to the air cleaner.

So now I have all new wheel studs in all axles. The carb is adjusted to stay running after the choke is off. On to tires. I was looking into saving money somewhere but I found that tires are not the place. Currently Buster has 33x12.50x15 on a 2 1/2 lift. Looks great but I wanted smaller and skinnier (or so I thought).

Current tire 33 12.50x15
What I thought would work 31x10.5x15

No go. Looked like a donut.

Ended up putting on Firestone Destination AT 33x12.50x15 for a decent enough price (pics to follow). I'm hoping that H55F will shine with these giant tires.

While waiting on the tires to ship from Norfolk, I worked on the rims. Anyone heard of Rockwell Fumagalli rims? Had them sandblasted, primed, and painted in a day.

Also swapped out my disintegrated amber side marker lights (thanks to @saucebox).

Went camping with my daughter over the weekend, rained most of the time. We sat inside and did crafts. What else was I to do but dream of one day driving Buster.

New tires on the freshly painted rims. One step closer to registering with the Dept of Motor Vehicles.

Seeing as the truck was already titled with an antique tag, I had no problem getting antique tags myself. The Commonwealth of Virginia (read -NOT A STATE-) is really big on vanity plates. Now, I have always fought following the norm or trends for that matter but I just couldn't help myself when "82FJ60" was available in a bright new yellow license plate. Pictures to follow of the plate (in about a month). The tag limits my range to 250 miles from home, pleasure cruising, and driving to maintain the vehicle but I don't see that stopping me from trying to attend the ONSC 2018 Relic Run by overcoming any mechanical issues that might pop up. I should have left all the pine tar on the paint, would have won "Best Patina" for sure! Left a message for the Toyota Dealership this morning regarding the seat belt and gas tank recall. I am itching to get this thing on the road ASAP. I bet my land lord feels the same way!!! Plans this week are to weld up the exhaust, replace more hoses under the hood, and diagnose the electrical to see if I am really only getting 8-10 volts from the alternator.

So, Chaos has kicked in this week. Got real excited about Buster running so well, the brakes stopping so well, and the tingly feeling the exhaust gave me that I puttered down the road for about twenty minutes on Monday night. RUST happened. In my juvenile joy, I spun out the rear wheels in 2 hi on a country paved road and knocked loose some rust in the gas tank. Spit, sputter, stall. Craaaaaaank, Crank, Craaaaank. Spit, sputter, stall. Get out, shake the filter, crank...rinse and repeat until I got the truck back into the garage. Beautiful new white fuel filter that has passed maybe a gallon or two of ethanol free fuel is now a really cool orange color. But back to whats important, I was able to spin the new 33" tires. Didn't know a cruiser could do that!:)

I had initially called Steven Toyota in Harrisonburg on June 26th at 1641 hours to inquire about the seat belt and fuel tank recall. They said they would get back to me. So, Tuesday morning I call them up. Left a message for the service guy Jim. He was kind enough to call back within a few hours to inform me the parts weren't available. Hmmmm...that's funny, cause the parts were all available on June 21st when @Ian Crawford got his done in Kentucky. After a short and nonproductive Q&A with Jim we were at a stand still. He agreed to touch base with the Parts Manager after he got back from holiday. I agreed to hang up the phone after wishing him a good day.

Called the dealership where I live (two hours away) and explained the situation regarding parts availability and my nuclear options at this moment in time. Haley Toyota in Roanoke, VA scheduled me for the 30th for the fuel tank replacement after the service adviser spoke with the service manager and the parts manager. I am not a mean or ugly person by any stretch because I've never seen that behavior work in the long run but I can be very persistent. Time, luck, and a little grace can go a long way in this crazy world. I'm hoping for some luck at this point.

In the meantime, I am lining up a truck, two wheel auto dolly, and possibly some smaller tires that fit the dolly. Buster will not be making it home on his maiden voyage under his own power. :(

This has been a very positive experience based on my accrued knowledge from my 80 series refresh, the FSM, and MUD members that have been here to help me with questions, mentally beat me up a little bit, and then point me in the right direction. My only regret at this point is that I can't follow through on my promise to let the PO drive it just one more time before Buster goes to my house. Maybe the PO will drive my way to visit his family (hint, hint, hint).;)

More chronicles to come.

Buster made the 110 mile trek home on the back of a two wheel dolly. Tearing out more of the interior and awaiting parts from @beno.

And a new tag to compliment the Mall Crawler pose.

Just a few pictures from the trip home.
