what should i look at? i cleaned to valve cover and there is nothing dripping on the exhaust in the engine compartment,i do have pretty bad leak in my steering box but i don't think thats it. any ideas?

I routinely smell this on my 80s because of the location of the rear drive shaft's greaseable joints. Over the years, they have sprayed the exhaust system repeatedly and it is simply always there. So, just tossing that out. If the bottom of your engine pan is drippy, it could be spilled oil from an oil change, your oil pump hoses leaking, or some other leak, but it will all cause that smell when passing air tosses oil onto the hot exhaust under there.

thanks i hate the smell ill track it down someday

I experience the same thing as Doug mentioned where grease from the drive shaft gets on hot exhaust components. Nothing to worry about if that's the case...
