Tires, winch, bumpers, sliders, average suspension, skid plate = pushing $6K for new parts scattered in the driveway. Plus beer and installation....:D

I don't know whether you bought Carl's truck or not (it did sell), but my stance (which you probably don't give a s*** about) is that if you can get a well built truck from a reliable source, it will be cheaper than building one from scratch. And that's from experience, although I built a 55 and bought a well built 80. Of course, if it's the building you want to do then the choice is obvious.

No I didn't buy Carls truck (I wish!)
For an 80 series, I am more interested in outfitting it for expedition-type use and mild-wheeling (I know they ALL start that way). I originally bought the FJ40 for this type of stuff, but the 40 series is becoming more of a serious rock crawler than an expedition rig.

Rear bumper for spare carrying, and a roof rack are definitly a plus. I am thinking mild lift (in the 2-3" range, though I LOVE the way an 80 series looks runnig 37's). Also, I want to put in dual batteries, and solar panel(s) for running the fridge (I am planning on getitng a propane fridge, rather than an ARB/Engel)Also, running mobile amateur radio, and beefing the sound system for in-camp tunes.

So, if I can find a build up FZJ80/LX450 that's the route I think I will go.

Thanks for all your input.

Me thinks no one was paying attention when BJowett said he'd sell his rig. Brian, what's up with that?

I have a few too many vehicles.... The wife just bought an 04 V8 Touareg, the wagon will be forsale shortly, my driveway is overflowing.... I can always build another!

Dual batteries? that's covered in my truck... just need to hook up the second.

carl's built fzj80

Todd,
I actually havn't sold it quite yet. I have had some real serious interest and an offer, but as of yet I still have it. Total of mods is over 12k. Not including labor (would have been over 15k w/rack,sliders, kaymar). All maintenance issues have been addressed. All driveability issues have been addressed. Nothing is needed. I have had many landcruisers and still do. My current interests are on my 60 and 100. In the NW I could probably sell the truck bone-stock for what I am asking, but feel what it has to offer could be very useful to someone.

I think the 'building' process for a 80 is so minimal that anyone could do it. Honestly by 'building' we're talking about putting new springs and shocks on, maybe some spacers, and maybe new front control arms, but for most people that's it. Not exactly rocket science.

Agreed, but.... Dual batteries/controller, bumpers, sliders, speedo correction of some sort, winch, bigger tires, skid plates.... It starts to add up in both time and (especially) money.

the thing that's odd about all this, is that we all seem to recognize/accept the fact that built-up rigs will not sell for much more than stock ones - at least to the general population- but yet, when I saw modded rigs, they always seem to have had astronomically high asking prices. Maybe the sellers can't swallow the financial and time loss? (Understandable.) The ones I saw when I was looking were basically stock price plus mod costs. Of course, they probably didn't sell like that, but I didn't want to deal with the aggravation of haggling and telling the poor guy that he would never sell at that price.... (So maybe shrewder guys got those at great prices...?) And, basically, I liked the idea of doing it myself, when I want to, the way I want to.

I sure do agree that modding a rig seriously so that it's visible would greatly detract from selling to the general public.

I sold my built 55 and built 62 both at reasonable prices. i originally asked high on the 55 and got nowhere. Again, build the truck yourself, you'll have way more money in it than you're ever going to get out of it. So factor in enjoyment and don't sweat it. Also, when I bought my 80 the asking price was reasonable and I paid what he was asking. Dumb? Nope. It was worth way more in terms of what he had in it than what he was asking, it was exactly what I wanted, and there was a line of Texans out the door waiting to buy it (fast) if I didn't. So it works both ways.

Most time when I sell a built rig, I ask market value for the vehicle, plus bout 60% of the retail value of the accessory parts and no labor to install it. Has always worked pretty well for both seller and buyer.

I think people are willing to pay a little more for a professionally built truck though. Rightly so.

Agree, especially if they know what they are looking at and have done their homework.

The other advantage that was a huge factor to me when looking for an 80, built or not, was that $6K-$12K takes quite a while for a working stiff like me to save up so buying one built meant i could play and have fun with it now, Brad.

I am looking at buying a DD truck to be used for mild wheeling, and more expedition type use, as well as occasional tow rig use for the FJ40 (with a flat bed equipped with TRALER BRAKES). THe FJ40 is going to be my hard core trail rig.

My budget is about $16-$19k
I am considering 2 different trucks.

DD truck?
Mild wheeling?
Expedition type use?
Tow rig for the FJ40?

Are you not the PERFECT candidate for a 100? For the above applications you couldn't choose a finer vehicle.

I think if you end up buying an 80 then drive (especially towing or expo driving) somebodies 100 you'd wish you waited? Give the 100 a drive and you won't go back to an 80 (unless you want a hard core 80 trail rig.)

I was when I stated: "A 100 can go where an 80 can" :D

I now have a new job and that's why I now say: "An 80 can go where a 100 can't" :D

I don't know if I can handle this 'new and enlightened Shootz'....................... :flipoff2:

Can't we go back to the way it was bro....................................................... :D

I would consider a UZJ-100 or an LX470 if I can find one for 16k that isn't beaten to s***.
Next, add in bull bar, winch, and a roof rack...

I can find lots of 80 series set up the way I want in my price range...
