what has been your experience?

do a search on mud for vintage off road in the chit chat area. I would not have his shop touch my cruiser or even look at it if I was considering taking it even across state lines. He is a fraud. Have a worthy mechanic check the one you bought please. I am not kidding.

What will go in the canopy on the back and is that a tent over the roof?

In regards to the power steering ,I would post a question on the 40 series forum. The easiest way is to use the power steering a 40/45 series that had it fitted but I imagne they are becoming scarce these days.

the canopy on the back is a pop top, yes that is a tent over the roof, from camping lab, i will post a picture later of the back popped up.

the easiest way to do a ps swap o nthe troopie is to source the parts from australia. you'll have to run hj61 components. they normally cost about $1k for the whole setup and are pretty sought after, even down under.

i'm doing a ps conversion on an hj47 right now but we're also swapping it from RHD to LHD.

you could do a ps swap using a sag box from a chevy truck. make sure it's a 4 bolt, 4.25 turn box. you don't want a 3 bolt or 3.5 turn version. it'll mount on the inside of the right frame horn. the ps plates i sell will work. you'll need a collapsible steering shaft and some joints, all of which can be bought from flaming river thru summit racing; they have the best prices and generally have everything in stock. mounting the ps pump may be a little interesting. there is room on the left side of the engine above the head. that's where i'm going to mount my ps pump. the hoses will most likely have to be custom made; most napa staores have the hose crimper and fittings in stock. they normally build custom hoses for $60-80. i would run a ps cooler on the return line also. i have these in stock as well if you need one.

i am in los angeles, california. i am thinking of using a saginaw box, what is the difference between the saginaw and hj 60 all factory parts and which would you recommend?

plans for the inside is still in progress, it will be "simple and basic" that is the challenge. most cooking will be done out side so there will be an outside kitchen....thanks

cool, that means the "fj45 run" is well within your "range" since it's in northern CA. i'm in stockton about 350 miles north of you.

if it were my rig, i'd opt for the saginaw conversion for multiple reasons:
1) more powerful
2) much easier to find components and replacement parts
3) cheaper
4) lots more info about it available on the net, eventhough you'll have to transpose everything from R to L

the only parts that might turn out to be a pita are the ps pump mount and the required double pulley. i have to build a ps pump mount for my customer's rig and one for myself. if you decide to go with the sag ps setup, i can definetly make another one so you don't have to start from scratch.

we should try to hit up some of the ozzies on here to see what they've done for double pulleys on the 2H or H. i bet there's a factory double pulley out there. we just need to find them........

Do you mean the crank pulley George? They come in triples on 2H and 12HT

this 2h only has one.

i have three troopies here right now, mine ( an hj45 and an hj47 ) along with a custoemrs hj47 ( in the pic ) and all three of them have single crank and waterpump pulleys.

i knew that the 12HTs had multiple pulleys on the crank. so i need to find a source for the double crank and waterpump pulleys and associated waterpump spacers ( if there is a need for one due to possible fan clearance issues ).

picture of my build

finally figured out how to post picture here, my goal is to be done building the "shell" then i will move on to the mechanical section by August. i will post on the tech section 40 and 55 series tech my plans for that, i am very interested to hear ideas and suggestions you all might have about mechanical upgrade i am planning to do. here is a current picture of my build. camper frame is made from steel tube, pop top hinge comes from VW westfalia, air spring to keep the pop top up, fiber glass reinforce plywood on the camper shell, roof will be marine plywood reinforce with epoxy resin and fiber glass cloth (not yet installed), roof top tent is from camping lab. here is his link campinglab
