Nope. Positive I wasn't because I checked the hubs/lever last night. I did use it a couple of weeks ago on a snow run, but I'm kind of a freak about the hubs, and transfer case lever since I put the Orion in. I literally check the transfer case lever every time I drive the vehicle. I've only had it for 500 - 1000 miles, and have been meticulous with it's use.

First thing I did was check the hubs to see if one grenaded or something. They appear OK.

You are extremely lucky that something did not fly up and hit your fuel pump and create all sorts of drama with fuel as well.....TBI 2F or V8?

Well the front driveshaft had to be turning in order for that kind of damage to occur. So either your shifter moved and your front drive was engaged that way, or your lockouts were not isolating the front axle shafts from the wheels properly.

That kind of destruction does not just happen while driving in two wheel drive on pavement at 65mph.....

Good point. Motor is a 3FE swap from a 92 FJ80.

Agreed. I've not had the popping out of gear problems, nor do I think the problem would occur in this condition. When I say I checked the hubs, I just gave a visual inspection to make sure they were in Free. I didn't disassemble them. Should be able to get to it tomorrow night. I'll post what I find in this thread.

Thanks for the help.

once again, steve is right on the money. that damage can only have been caused by the front end being engaged or possibly locking up at high speed. the nose cone is definetly "twiested' off, not broken off like all the others we've seen.

just because the hubs are unlocked does'nt mean they're not turning the front driveshaft. if you have too much grease in the hub bodies, they it can cause enough drag on the parts to keep the birfs turning..........

sure looks like it made a racket when it let go! LOL

I have seen the hub selector turned to 'free' yet the locking ring is frozen to the birfield stub with old, rusty grease. The locking hub is one place where more grease is not a good thing.

fwiw, i did finally hear back from danny warden about the billet nose cones. even if we can come up with 12 or more people who'd want one, my cost would be just under $300 each and they need to be paid for in advance. :frown:

Put me on the list also, Georg.

Thanks.

Wow! Looks like xiero's case exemplifies how Georg's most excellent NC saver won't prevent every break.

The flange of xiero's cone seems intact. That's got to be some serious sheer forces!

Georg, I'll be in for a prepaid Warden nose cone. Just send me a pm when you want the money.

In regards to the last failure posted , I'd bet that your 2wd/4wd lever is not disengaging the shift collar. They will tend to engage it very well but jump outa the notch in the shift rod when disengaging. Best way to check is to reach under and rotate driveshaft by hand.

i broke one on my rig a few years back, 350 4 speed T-case.. Sprung over 35's Square Front Driveshaft.

I Broke the Rear drive shaft in moab, and had to drive the rig back to camp on the front shaft.. While i was installing a new shaft i noticed front leaking, and the Tabs where all cracked...

I Attest the Breakage to the heavy unbalanced front shaft!

well, if and when we get 12 people who are'nt just interested but will actually pony up the $300, then it should take 3-4 weekd to have them in hand. shipping is not included in that price.

Looks like I get to join the klub.

Sprung under on 37's.
Extra low performance 1F, SM420
Square tube front driveshaft.
Stock 4.1's lockright in the front

Transfer was rebuilt about 5 years ago when I installed the SM420.

I found all but one bolt hole at least mostly stripped and one hole was cracked.

As I have a trip coming up, I managed to fix the old case up good enough to hold on until I can get a Dana 300 in. Link to fix- (coming soon)

I blame this on the bolts working themselves loose from vibration resulting from the square tube shaft and front lockright. Odd that it took several years for it to happen and that there was hardly any warning (leaks etc)

Home made "splitcase"

That was me a year ago. I was losing alot of oil. I went under to replace seals and saw the crack running down the back side. When I unbotled the top plate it fell apart. Every bolt was a little loose. I crawl around all the time now just tightening bolts after losing the t/c and a hub from loose stuff. And just because you lock tighted it and torqued it once does not mean it wil stay that way.
