Broken Nose cone!

I broke one. Truck was F/sm420/3-speedw/saver/4.11 sitting on 40s. I was in the black hills summer 07. There was pressure on the front drive shaft, but not the whole weight of the truck and all 4 tires were trying to climb; I think 1 or 2 were slightly undercut. The gears pushed thru the front of the case, bound up and lots of traction.

I have split a few other cruiser t-cases but no other nose cone failures.

T-Case was replaced by atlasII: pending

Edit: Looking back at it now, I recall my first impression being that the gears pushed thru the front of the case.

bawahahaha, cruiser on 40s with a 3spd nose cone and vacuum shift. that's rad!

i think a lot of these failures are a classic example of an oem component being pushed to its' limit. i'm not trying to be a wise guy here or point fingers, but it's just a fact. the stock t-case can only put up with so much. i'm always amazed that the front output shafts hold up as well as they do. they must be made of unbreakium. i have seen a couple of them twist off att the splines but all in all, they hold up amazingly well.

two more points to ponder:

failure reason #4:

impact. come down on a rock with the nose cone....enough said but not to be overlooked.

also, back to my point about "gear deflection". i have not heard of a nose cone breaking on an orion due to this scenario. i attribute this to the helical cut of the gears used in the orion being much shallower. has anybody on here had an issue with the nose cone on the orions faling other than driveline related issues?

The vacuum shift kicked ass, I don’t understand why people went thru the effort of getting rid of it.

There is no doubt I push these Toyota parts too far, especially the t-case, that is why it got replaced by an atlas.

i agree about the vac shifter. they're actually very reliable and work well. imho, the only reason against running them is that they're a bitch to fix on the trail. at least with the mechanical shifter you can climb under the truck and lock it in 4wd.

Anyone else?

You gonna have some made, Steve?

when I got my SM420 toybox 3spd case from Mistard dag on Pirate the cone was broken from his last trip on the hammers...at least my trannys been there

this weekend I took out my rear shaft and then the nose cone no pics yet but I too would love to buy a used one of these upgreads or even George's nose cone saver ???? I think mine pushed out the front so I dont know that any of it will help.... mine now broke all the ears at once :bang:

Epidemic?

It would seem that the failures described in this thread talk about modified suspension systems playing into the failure more than anything else.

Anyone else?

The later model nose cones are stronger. They have more gussetts. I agree with Orange. Alot has to do with binding. However, I grenated a front drive yoke 3 weeks ago at Tellico. I suspect old age to be the culprit.

I pulled the drive shaft and shifter linkage and it just fell out  I didnt know I needed a 36 mm socket to get the tcase off SOOO I will have to buy that and start over later  I hope Orange45's tcase saver will help this from happening again .... but I dont think it will but I will carry spare drive shafts from now on ... I think I would of been ok in 4wd not just front :hillbilly:

any ideas on what broke this one

Have you always run this case without the needed bearing in the front part of the output shaft?

I would be very interested in seeing your rear drive shaft/what is left of it, and your rear suspension.

:meh:

nope they're in the nose cone

and the rear shaft wasa classic rock tap and twist .. the rear supention it SOA with shackled tork bar

but the hat almost makes up for the missing bearing. LOL

Needle bearing missing here:

and looks like it has been for some time...

:meh:

well they are on the other side with a race ... well most of em looks like they fell out after the fact..... but I guess It could of been bad :hhmm:...but I have 20 or so trips on it since the last nose cone swap ... I think it had more to due with the lack of RWD but :hillbilly:

thanks I like it too ... but will your saver .... save it from this :hillbilly:

well when i pulled it out there was a race lookin thing on this side I guess it fell off as I carried it in the house ... but these are the needle bearings y'all are talikin about right

yup, looks like the race let go. possibly when the cone broke since the race will be the main "support" to keep the shafts lined up at that point.

Guess I'll add mine to the list.

H41/Orion 4:1

I was driving to work ~65 MPH. Not sure if it was a nose cone or drive shaft failure, but the Orion appears intact.

Any ideas how this could have happened?
