Brembo vs OEM for FJ80

I'm running the Brembos on my rig. They've only been on the 80 for a year, but I've used Brembo rotors in the past on my other rigs and have yet to be disappointed. They are top notch quality.

Semi-metallics do not pad imprint, but there are warnings about bedding them in correctly at install to avoid juddering problems that are similar to the ones found from organic (most OEM pads are organic) pad imprinting. They also grab fast which is why they are used in racing, but they are very hard on OE style rotors and will cause grooving. Premium slotted and/or cross drilled rotors help keep the metallic pad surfaces flat (that's the big advantage for slotted/drilled--ability to use the semi-metallics without trashing your rotors). Adding cryogenic freezing puts rotors and pads on a completely different plateau as far as longevity.
Thank you for the additional info...that's why I appreciate this board! I was advised to buy the rotors and pads as a "set", and now I know why. Couldn't be happier!

NINE YEAR BUMP

Anyway so on the front I've got Brembo rotors and brembo 100 series pads. On the rear I got some premium new rotors and brembo 80 series pads. I've installed those in 3/25/19 and have since put on almost exactly 30k miles on them. Recently I've been smelling a lot of "brake" smell and the brakes are extremely squeaky/grindy - not the wear indicator noise. I have not taken apart the brakes yet, but i did do a visual inspection, which resulted in the brake pads being worn down to about 50%. However, the rotors, especially the non-brembo ones, had a pretty damn good lip. I have concluded that the brake pads are pretty damn aggressive and not very rotor friendly. The front rotors have some tiny surface cracks on the brake pad friction surfaces - cant feel them with the fingernail. About 10-15k miles after putting them on I've noticed some discoloration rings on the front rotors as well.

Overall the brake dust is almost non existent and I haven't had a lot of complaints about the brake combination - it is adequate. I was not impressed with the performance but I was not disappointed. I think I have definitely overheated the brakes a few times but the rotors overall performed well - no warping that I can notice.

I think its possible that the brake pads have glazed over and the rotor cracks are surface only, which could be fixed by sanding down the pads and machining the rotors, but I want to try out another combination. Taking this experience I will take apart the brakes and replace everything with power stop slotted/drilled rotors and porterfield pads (fj100 fronts).

FWIW I use Brembo brake pads on customers cars if I can get them, they are soft enough to not make noise and ruin discs, and yet hard enough to last a reasonable amount of time, I recently finished a rear axle seal overhaul on my 80 and fitted Brembo pads while in there. Given I might change a hundred sets or more brake pads a year I reckon that experience counts.

No affiliation etc.

Regards

Dave

Wanted to update on my situation with the brake pads. I have thought about the issue and the problem was not based on the Brembo brake pads, but on me over adjusting rear proportioning valve. I think i just put too much pressure on the rear for such a small brake pad and small rotor. The issues with my brakes start occurring a month or so after adjusting the proportioning valve and im positive its causation and not correlation. Once I put my 150lbs bumper on the front and my truck got a bit of a rake, the rear brake problem doesn't seem/smell as significant, potentially due to raising the proportioning valve arm.
