I installed a freshly rebooted oem axle on my 2000 LX with 190k miles this past sunday and had a bear of a time getting the axle back in to the knuckle. I just couldn’t seem to get the angle right.

While I was working on getting it in I noticed the brass bushing had popped loose. I pulled the axle back out, cleaned the bushing and lubed up the spindle bearing then tapped the bushing back in and finally got the axle in and seated.

There were some scratches on the outboard inner lip of the bushing from trying to get the axle in. I didn’t have another bushing in hand and was pressed for time so I rolled with it. I’ve driven about 500 miles since then and everything seems well.

Frankly I forgot all about it until today. Should I be worried about this? Could it cause some type of catastrophic failure? I’m not even sure of the function of this piece. Not a lot to be found researching.

What do you guys think?

The CV axle is located on the hub by the busing and the snap ring. If there is too much play, there will be increased wear on the splines of the hub.

If you ensured that the CV axle snap ring gap was less than 0.2mm after installation, then I wouldn't worry about it. Did you measure the gap?

If the gap can no longer be corrected with a thicker snap ring, it is time for a new bushing.

THanks for the info. I did check the gap and installed the proper snap ring. I’m booking it across Texas right now headed to HIHs from Georgia. Everything seems good.
