Wow, I wish, I didn't know you could get a new 2F through MAF!

This same question has been brought up several times. Might be helpful to look those threads up. I've looked into that one myself though, and it seems to be that the consensus is that sometimes man-a-fre gets it right, and sometimes they don't, and you can have a local engine builder do the same thing for cheaper and if there are warrant issues, you'll be glad you did. If something goes wrong with the Man-a-fre, (which is not unheard of) to get it back to them to see if they will take care of it, (sometimes they do, sometimes they don't) is going to be pretty tough and cost prohibitive... I've had several engine builders recommended to me in the Colorado Springs, Denver, Pueblo area if get mine rebuilt, and they are listed in my thread "compression numbers not so good."
Hth.

P.S. Have you peeked behind the diamond plate on you're cruiser yet? There may be things you want to spend you're money on before an engine...

For $4,300 I do not want to read this.

Disclaimer: These parts are designed for racing and off-road use only. They are not intended for use in lieu of factory emission control devices, and they are not legal for sale or use in California on pollution controlled vehicles.

If you are running the Buick v6, then you are also subject to the core charge of $1,000 also. I see very little chance of satisfaction for $5,395. I, as stated above, would be able to find other places to spend that kind of coin. I have found 2f a simple engine to tune and although mine did not run when purchased, It runs like a top now, and even passed California emissions for a 1976 vehicle. I, myself would buy a used 2f and rebuild it. However it is your money and you can spend it however you damn well please!

A thousand dollar core charge? For a used 2F? They're nuts.

6 grand outright for a motor? Personally, I'd rather spend that kind of coin at a local shop for a rebuild by someone I know.

Glad to get the consensus on MAF. Thanks! I guess I'll probably go looking for a 2F. Have pretty much decided I'm going to go stock on it unless I can find a good Chevy motor (V6 or low V8 -- don't want to get killed on gas mileage) for cheap.

it looks like eddings charges alot cheaper than what man-a-fre asks for the motor

Prices.
s/b l/b c/k m/k
3878cc/3.9 60-75 F, W/New Cam 1621 2417 239 944
3956cc/4.0 88-92 3FE, W/New Cam 1748 2572 244 1154
4230cc/4.2 75-87 2F, W/New Cam 1627 2524 244 1047

I bought an old 2f long block from Tim Hill, and did roughly what MAF is charging a lot of money for, and I had approx $2,200 out of pocket. Of course that wasn't counting my labor. I went with the Downey cam and maf headers and pistons.

The prices you listed are for Eddings' std rebuilt engine - not for the the purported 'hipo' engine MAF sells.

I met a guy who was running a new chevy straight 6, and he was really pleased with it. an option to think about if you are making a total change.

what i have herd that once you have converted to v8 or v6 you realy cant go back to i6 but that is what i heard.

You can always go back - but once you have put the $ into a proper swap you probably won't want to spend that $ again to put things back to stock form.

v8 = more power, more available parts, not stock
stock 6 = good enough power for me, stock, don't have to spend any $ on retrofits

I don't see a huge benefit to going with a v6 over a v8 if you are getting away from stock. If you are going to that much trouble toss a v8 in there.

herd = buffalo, heard = audible :grinpimp:

This will be more than a weekend cruiser so gas mileage is somewhat of a concern. I'd rather be putting the money I would be spending on gas with a V8 into improvements on this FJ or my '72 or fly fishing or hunting so if I don't revert to stock I'd prefer a newer Chevy V6.
