What Borgelson joints have any of you used on a fj60 PS box in a 40, thanks in advance, Larry

The input shaft on a 60 steering box is 17.5mm x 36 splines. Borgeson doesn't offer offer u-joints in this size, but a 11/16 - 36 u-joint (.001 smaller) which is a stock item from them will fit without problem.

If you work it a bit, you can use the FJ-60 intermediate shaft to get the joints / splines.

I connected to the FJ-55 steering column.

There's an FJ-60 shaft, with a FJ-55 joint at the PS box.

Rocky-

Post up a few more pictures of that exhaust system where it meets the exhaust manifold.

I have my 60 intermediate shaft flipped the other way from what Rocky shows, so the big u-joint is by the firewall where there's more room. But I have been looking into replacing the whole thing with a unit from Borgeson so I can have a real slip joint and a real collapsible shaft. So thanks for posting this up and thanks for the reply. What are you going to do at the steering column end? Double D?

Subzali -

I think I read your and PabloC's writeup. I am running the 60 intermediate shaft with the pin driven out, and I left the one (inner) plastic "spacer" in the '60 intermediate shaft. It firms up the joint (no steering wheel play), and gives you ~12" of "collapse". Mine has worked out OK.

The big end (55 Joint) had to be machined down (like PabloC's writeup) so it wouldn't bind up.

I have a lower end of the 60 shaft somewhere, I think I know where I can find the other end as well, I do like the borgelson shafts, Do you use the 60 stuff for strength or because you have it, thanks, Larry

brew8, the 60 stuff is the right length and has the right spline count to attach to the bottom of an FJ55 steering column on one end and a 60 steering box on the other. It's designed to be collapsible (has two plastic pins that break on impact), and if you punch the pins out you can have a make-shift slip joint (which works in theory and is what I'm running now, but I would feel better with a purpose-built slip joint personally). The FJ55 column is about 1 1/2" longer (I think, check the link in my sig) than a 40, but retains the same old-school wheel, so it looks "factory." I and a few others have issues with the new ergonomics, however, and I think a couple fellas have come up with workarounds.

For me, I'm thinking of going back to a 40 column/wheel, to get my ergonomics back, and I'll just cut off the rag joint and grind it into a "double-D" to connect it to a Borgeson u-joint. You can get a Borgeson shaft that not only collapses, like the 60 shaft, but has a purpose-built slip joint as well. And the u-joints are smaller, which looks better and also helps with clearance issues (the 60 ps setup runs really close to the stock shock towers).

Check out the link in my sig line for my writeup and I have a link in there to PabloCruise's writeup as well, more info in there.

wonder where that could be?:hhmm:

3 puppies You should know, Subzali, thanks for the info, I have used the borgelson joints in the past and I liked them and how they worked, so I may have to check prices, Larry
