There is an idea I have stolen from the 80 Series forum and I want to know if you guys think it will work on our 100 series inside rear tailgates. This guy has two 10" Marine Deck plates/Inspection plates, where he first had to drill the large holes into the tailgate and then is able to store a lot of gear in these really great looking and smooth with the carpet. usually in color back or white and I belive you can buy see-through. Any help on this idea - if you can drill holes into the rear tail gate where the carpet is, to expose an empty space, and if so than these Marine deck plates would fit right it and you could have extra space to store recovery gear and also have a very cool looking 100 series tailgate with one 10" circle at each end of the inside of your tail gate. Please help out a rookie before I learn the hard/dumb way by drilling out a 10" circle through carpet and metal. If you want to see pictures I would check the 80 series forums for what I listed in the TITLE. I hope someone of you are as thrilled about this idea as me and ones against it please tell me why b/c maybe it is important facors I have overlooked. THANKS CJ

You could do what you want. Search for wagon gear tailgate to see a better way.

You could start by removing the carpet, which is glued to a piece of masonite-type stuff, which attaches to the tail gate with a dozen or so pop-in plastic fasteners. You can do it with a putty knife or trim removal tool.

Trace the cut line for the deck plates on a file folder, cut it out, lay it on the tail gate and see what you might destroy.

Should take 10 minutes or so.

Report back. ;)

This is not the deck plate mod you are looking for.

Unsure what you're responding to but still appreciating the reference nonetheless :D

1LoudLX - I am not sure what you mean by this is not the deck plate mod you are looking for. If soeone looks at either to 80 series forum and search for 10" marine deck mounts or you google for Marine 10" deck pates you will see what I am talking about installing at each end of the tailgate (the inside) and then you have a way to access goodies you have there and it also will have a water seal top to it.

Search deck plate mod in the 100 section and it will probably make more sense...

what does this have anything to do with what he is trying to accomplish? are you just pointing out that he's using the wrong terminology?

Thanks Duggy!! b/c I am lost also in what point he is trying to convey to me. I am in the 100 series forum and I thought we were talking about deck plates. I am lost

No.... Fishie asked what loud was referencing and I pointed him to it.

If you take the time to read further up you will also see i told him he can do what he is trying and also pointed him to a thread that will

1- show him what he can do with the tail gate

And

2- a better solution.

What have you provided?

cj,

I think I understand what you're trying to accomplish; to cut some large holes on the inside of your tailgate to gain access to that as a storage area. To finish off the holes in a nice fashion you want to use Bomar brand deck plates (another brand is Beckson) and you want to incorporate the deck plates with the stock tailgate interior upholstery.

Those plates are typically available in different diameters as well as other shapes. It strikes me as a cost-effective way to gain access. Further if done with care, will look nice. You could probably come pretty close color-wise with some SEM brand interior paint.

I'm not looking to start a pizzing contest, but for me the wagongear solution is both expensive and "industrial looking". If that's what you want...Great! But I think the OP deserves credit for his idea...

Just keep in mind that there's not good way to secure whatever you're storing back in there as the gate tilts up. And if it's heavy, it will dent through to the outside.

I'm interested to see how it comes out, the wagongear is a sweet solution and well executed but I would be more likely to homebrew something given the current wagongear price. The deck plates would likely need to be mounted in a more substantial plate and I'm sure a lot of related work would be involved but it would be great to be able to use the tailgate for occasional need storage for <$200.

I think it still qualifies as a deck-plate-mod even though he's not opening up a factory airbox for a perceived flow improvement. It's a mod based on a boat deck plate so maybe 'deck-plate-mod-type-2' or '8"-tail-hole-mod' should be the accepted terminology?

Yeah guys, it's a perfectly valid idea and has been done on lots of other trucks. Those bomar hatches are nice and sturdy and it will give you access to the space at least.

If you just take a look at this pic here:

It will tell you most of what you need to know.
Basically as long as you identify where the lateral support ribs are (you can find the spot welds and mark where they are) you can pretty much cut whatever holes you want and not compromise the lid structure. (you loose surface structure where the holes are but good quality hatches will replace that just fine). You just don't want to be cutting those ribs until you are reinforcing the whole tailgate afterwards though.

For the carpet cut the best bet will be to just carefully cut your holes with a utility knife.

The downside here is that you end up with access to the gate but only to a small area, the 100 series gates have struts that go from skin to skin unlike the 80s and 60s that just have little ribs. The interior volume is divided up and deck plates will only let you access the one section where they are mounted.

here's my solution.

Tailgate carries all my recovery gear permanently.

I cut out the middle struts, I can stand on it with out any problem, I'm around 120kg.
Tailgate is a little heavy when lowering it when loaded with gear, but I am used to it now.
